Gnat or Wasp.... anyone open one up?

Post by smallsynth » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:12 pm

I've got a Gnat with a scratchy pot. I want to open it up to clean it, but I'm not familiar with the method used to seal the plastic case. Can I just pop those plastic rivets out and then back in later? Or are they more like nuts and bolts, where you have to fasten the other side to hold it in place?

Where'd you get the Gnat?
I just sold mine, which also had scratchy pots.
I was afraid to open it up though--i popped out the plastic rivets on the back, but got nervous about cracking the case and popped them back in. Proceed with caution.
Once you are ready to put it back together, it would be wise to replace the pop rivets with screws, like the Wasp and Spider use.

How do you like your Gnat?

i bought my gnat years ago from a guy who used to frequent vse. it came from england in a tiny box with one layer of that little bubble wrap under it and one layer over it. i couldn't believe it worked.

but it did, and i love it. not only is it a, uh, small synth, but unlike the eh400 it is flexible enough to allow for expressive performances. i used it in the studio on much of my band's last album, and am using it as my primary lead line source on my current electronic stuff.

i'm glad to hear those rivets pop out and back in. so at least work can be attempted. can you tell me what exactly made you nervous? i mean, could you start to feel tension on the case or circuit board? or what? i'd like as much knowledge going into this so i don't screw it up.

Bending the plastic enough to pop out the rivets is what made me nervous. Seemed like the case would easily crack under too much tension.

Be careful.
