midi clock sync for vintage synths?

Post by ni-cad » Fri Sep 25, 2009 9:57 pm

Hi.

Is it at all possible to modify vintage lfo's in synths and such so they will sync to an external clock?
I'm hoping that there is some kind of kit, perhaps a deopfer kit or similar that will allow control over the start cycle and speed of the lfo in an old phaser I'm buying.

I wonder if this could be done by replacing the lfo completely with a modern part?

Is it at all possible?

Regards

ni-cad.

No, I cant afford a Kenton, it's only a guitar pedal, it doesn't have CV/gate in either.

Then the answer is no.

If the vintage gear has a CV input, you can use some MIDI-CV boxes from Kenton, Encore, etc. to send a midi-synced lfo. But these only syncs the start point of the lfo.

I think the only way to have a proper midi-sync'd lfo in CV form is to use Volta or Silent Way with a compatible audio interface.

Yep, analog LFOs never know when the next incoming pulse is going to happen, to set the rate automatically. So with the LFO restarting in time with the MIDI clock you´ll have to tell it how fast it will cycle, i.e. set the rate manually. It should be easy and also allow for some interesting results not possible with digital, like applying your own tempo/swing feel. With a digital LFO you´d still have to set it to cycle every 4 or 8 bars, 16th notes or whatever too.
Perhaps some logic circuit could be made to send alternating positive and negative voltages every, say, 1024 ppqns. That would generate a square wave, but not very useful for phasers. To turn it into a triangle or sine wave you´d need timing capacitors set to charge/discharge at halfway. Probably the beat would always be like one bar ahead of the cycle, but then it´s for a phaser, not much of a problem. Or if the counter could send a predetermined increasing/decreasing value every next pulse, say +5,00V, +4,98, +4,96 ... 0V, -0,02V, -0,04, -0,06... -5V... pfff better use DSP for that.
Sorry, I´m reinventing the wheel

To the OP: if it´s important to your music, this thing has just come out

There is a preprogrammed PIC from Blacet
http://www.blacet.com/MSdata.html
then you would have to make a new LFO using its output (some kind of digital counter + simple digital to analog + smoothing. i would just use an arduino and a few external components)
I actually have one of these and you have given me an idea for a project :D

 That MIDI Sync IC is simply amazing.
