JX-3p - smellls like $#!* and battery question

Post by THEODICY » Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:47 am

I just picked up a JX-3p for $100 but the battery is dead and it smells like it's been smoked around for quite a while. The rate slider shaft has broke off and the volume pot is scratchy, go figure. oh, and one of the keys is not seated properly but I still need to investigate that to see if it's an easy fix. But, everything does function and it sounds clean, it's too bad it doesn't smell clean as well. It's REALLY bothering me!!! I have the following questions.

1) What can I do about the smell?

2) Can someone point me to a guide for the battery replacement?

3) Where can I find a rate slider replacement?

4) Where can I find a key replacement if I need one?

Maybe I should not have picked it up but for $100 I figured, what the heck. It's really funny because the JX-3p was the first synth I ever wanted to buy when I started getting into synths. I must have looked at at least 10 JX-3p's but every time something would prevent me from buying one. Either I knew about one somewhere in a pawn shop and the day I went to get it it would be gone, or something was really wrong with some of them, or timing was way off or I didn't have the money.... it has always felt like fate had prevented me from getting one of these! This time I guess I got suckered in. Please help, thanks in advance.

If you can smell it after a cursory cleaning, its in the plastic.

Replacement key: http://sounddoctorin.com/synthtec/parts/key.htm (among others)

as for the rate slider i'd have to see the specs for it.... I'd see if Digikey has one of the same spec. But really if i was cracking it open to replace a slider, I'd do the volume pot too.

If you get tired of staring at it lemme know.

I have a vintage synth that had a weird smell when I bought it. I put it in my garage, aimed a box fan at it, and ran it on high for about 3 days. That was a few years ago. It probably smells about 10% of that now.

This is going to sound strange, but try cleaning it with Febreze. Don't spray it directly on the synth -- spray it on a cloth and rub the synth with that.

If a previous owner smoked around it, the boards are probably all covered with tar. That will eat up the copper eventually. You may have to pull the boards out and clean them with solvent.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

Simple green is worth trying. Also, windex but test an area first

What kind of solvent do I need to use on the boards? How do I do it to make sure it doesn't get damaged when cleaning? Anyone know what battery to get as a replacement and where?

About the parts, please contact me. I should have some left in my boxes.

About the battery replacement it is pretty straightforward. Open it up, spot the battery, replace with the same type. BUT DO SAVE YOUR PATCHES FIRST BECAUSE YOU ONLY HAVE 2-3 MINUTES BEFORE THE MEMORY ERASES ITSELF.

Does anyone know where I can get a new battery and what the part number or model of the battery? I can't seem to find ANY information on the web about this.

CR1/3N is the model. 3V. You should find it in all good electronics distributors (Newark, Digi-Key,...). If you don"t find it, I've just found one in my boxes while I was searching for something else.

Ahh... thanks! I actually found one locally at the store called Batteries Plus. Thanks for the tip and those parts you are sending me.
