Help with Elka Rhapsody trouble

Post by rharris07 » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:54 pm

My Elka Rhapsody 490 string machine had been playing just fine, then out of the blue - it makes no sound!

It powers on fine, when I really hit the keys I'll get a bit of sound registered on my mixer (visible by a green light), but nothing is really heard.

Any ideas what could have caused this? How I might fix it?

Nothing has changed with it, I didn't move it...no animals, no smoke, no trouble at all prior to it acting up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

1. double check external things,,,plugs, jacks, mixer levels, etc
2. signal-trace backward from the output jacks
3. check power supply

i checked power supply, no trouble visible.

checked the external stuff - mixer, jacks, etc. - everything is fine..works perfectly with other synths.

i plugged a pair of headphones into the output on the rhapsody and got some sound out, but even at the highest level its very faint, and only in mono....

any ideas??

I'd say op-amps or transistors. Hard to day which, I don't have the schematics.

both sound expensive for an old italian machine like this...i can't really find any data on this thing on the internets.

Check the power board...On the right of the board are the dc connections (Several wires go to the positive and negative connectors....This should read 27v.

The far left board (master osc) works at 27v.

This is your starting point.

iirc, the Elka does not have a headphone out. You would hear little/nothing using 'phones on the main out. At the least, you'll need a schematic and a signal tracer. Maybe time for a tech.

EDIT: Did you just get any new gear? Something the Elka would be jealous of ??? (lol)
