Another dead instrument

Post by Cumulus » Wed Apr 28, 2010 11:07 pm

I was putting frash bateries in several pieces of gear in preparation for tomorrow night's show and Lo, and Behold, the TR-606 is completely dead!

New fresh C cells failed to revive it. The old ones didn't leak or anythign and they haven't been in there very long but it's completely dead.

Just in time for me to pick up the 808 and the CS-50 at the repair shop... :(

I am looking at power supplies right now. Chip For Brains has one that looks like it will do the job.

Also check for broken or loose solder connections on the battery contact wires.

I've been using a new boss PSA power supply that works fine with my 606; you may want to check that option before waiting a while for delivery =/
bonne chance

You can use any standard wall wart adapter that delivers 9v and 300Ma or more. Go to Rat Shack or Wal-Mart and grab one. Just make sure you put the tip on so you have a negative center.

My power supply arrived this afternoon from Hong Kong so I plugged it in not really thinking anythign good would happen but, amazingly, the things works perfectly!

I hate the fact that it does not work on battery power but at least it's working.

So what would cause the 606 to work with the AC adapter but not with battery powere. There doesn't seem to be any battery leaskage issues inside the battery compartment.

Is ther esomethign specific I shoudl check if I want to fix it myself?

+1 given age, etc.

With a multimeter check if voltage is reaching the board from the batteries, if not, trace the wires back, check at the switch, make sure all the metal terminals (including the one that's usually across from the terminal with wires on it) are seated properly, resolder anything that's busted.

some battery terminals are longer than others. make sure the batteries are actually making contact. if not, you may have to remove and bend the metal contact point.

The batteries seem to be making contact. I will have to do some more testing.

On a positive note I picked up the 808 and the CS-50 from the repair shop today. I haven't played them yet and I can't wait.

Nothing lasts forever. Analog electronics are no exception.
