Well, I'm boned!! :(
1: Get used Akai MPK49 in the mail after a week, all the way from Pennsylvania
2: Set it up controller with one of the new modules I have
3: Unit doesn't send any MIDI data, only glitches upon startup every now and again
4: Troubleshoot everything
5: Troubleshoot everything AGAIN, realize it's broken
6: Try to reinstall firmware
7: Need to erase firmware first: Ok, done.
8: Load up .SYX file in fancy proprietary software... Uhh nothing happened. ...Done?
9: MPK reads "DONE". Ok... Rebooting the Akai.
10: Unit no longer powers on, because it doesn't actually have firmware in it after all.
11: Pull a Trent Reznor on it.
12: Unit has been repaired with a mic stand and my shoes.
Special thanks to Akai, and Music Go Round Wilkes-Barre, for this magical moment.

This happened to me once.

I can't remember exactly, but I think if you boot with that button sequence you can try loading the firmware again.

Trying that. It did start up again with that button combo.
edit: I keep pressing enter when it's done, but nothing happens.

Re: Well, I'm boned!! :(
If your a Windows user use Midi OX or a DAW sequencer ... or something of the like
If you are a Mac user (10.5.8 and down ) Use SysEx Librarian ...
IF You use 10.6 and above then use another computer as there is some issue with updating the MPK's / MPD's firmware on it .
The editor is kinda ... unstable as far as losing communication with the devise so yea I recommend a 3rd party app for firmware updates .
Let us know how it goes .
Good Luck .

Problem was solved. Akai tech support is very helpful.
Firmware was reinstalled, and apparently you need an external PSU to use it with modules. I don't get it, but ok.

Hmmm, I generally contact tech support to see if they can help me before doing my internet tough guy routine. I guess that must just come down to cultural differences though.

So it's like a padKontrol where if you want to use it without a power supply you need midi ox to send it back through the USB and to the Midi-Out? At least that is what I remember having to do because you could either use it USB powered to use with a comp or with a power adapter to use with a module. Using Midi-Ox was the workaround.
