Bizzaro ! Two first thoughts:

1. Synth has been dropped/bashed and the key contacts are screwed.

2. Previous owner programmed every VCA envelope to "key up" as a gag.

+ Something florbed in the OS? Try a reset. VCA not getting signal until key release segment?

Trusty Rhino thanks for responding.

I tried the reset that did not help and it is in great shape no sings of damage at all. Sometimes if i press the key twice at the right speed I can get to sound before release at times it will sustain till I hit another key. I was thinking one of the pedal jacks may be bad.

Did you get your PolySix board installed I just finished mine and I was not looking forward to calibrating it so I metered all the trim pots and set the new ones to the same value and it worked perfect. :o

Looks like the D-50 uses rubber key contacts so unlikely that ALL could be bad at once.

Try playing from MIDI.. if that works, maybe a problem in the keyscan board. Found a schematic on the web, but did not include the actual keyscan board.

PolySixs are still in pieces waiting for me to finish the new wood cabinets

The D-50 has everything on a single board (other than the control panel and display), there is no separate "keyscan" board.

Try the MIDI thing, if it plays ok, then it's something to do with the keyboard or the circuits that scan it. My first hunch is a connector between the keyboard and the motherboard is installed incorrectly (backwards, out of alignment or loose). Open it up and see what you find. Check and/or replace the battery while you have it open too.

There is a keyscan board or some other board between the keyboard and the main board look.

I'm picking up the my midi keyboard tonight and I'll try it tomorrow and give an update.

Thanks

Thought so. Can't always trust the ol' brain. If that's where the problem is, you might need to hit ebay for a parts donor. Give Roland a call just in case.
EDIT:
Looks like the surface-mount chip is an HB63H149 gate array.
The socketed chip (6116ASP-12) is most likely an EPROM. This may be the trouble point.
(aside) I had an Ensoniq SQ-80 that played a chromatic scale all by itself at power-on, then locked up. The EPROM on its keyscan had gotten scrambled.

The midi keyboard worked so it looks like the keyscan board.

What should I do now Roland does not have a replacement.

Hit all the Roland D-series user groups and
1. see if anyone has one for sale
2. EDIT: ignore this-------see if anyone has the code to burn a new EPROM
3. see if any other D-series board used the same scanner

4. keep on ebay
5. post on 'gear wanted' here
6. examine the board for bad connections, cold joints, etc. Reseat the socketed chip.
7. sacrifice a chicken to the synth gods.

It sucks when non-standard, out-of-production parts go bad.

part of the 'fun' of vintage synths (lol)

What are the exact numbers on the two chips?

On furthur digging, the 6116 seems to be a SRAM, so I doubt it is the cause of this problem.

check your PM

Do you think one bad trace on the contact board could cause the whole keyboard to do this?

On the key contact board? Unlikely - BUT STILL POSSIBLE !!
Still try re-seating the socketed chip and checking the serface-mount chip for gunk and s**t on the leads.
While you're at it, check the scan board for cracks and cracked and/or broken traces.
