removed the 4 little screws with an allen key and the top cover rotates up on its hinge but there is still some resistance there
am i missing something?

Check to see if the left side of the cover is rubbing against the pitch/mod wheel/disk drive housing as you lift it. Same thing happens when I open my VFX. It's the same basic case design as the plastic case ESQ, SQ-80, and the SD-1. It's a pretty tight fitting lid.

thanks - looks like there is a little strip of felt/cardboard or something under the main board that makes a sort of lip under the edge
after some fairly aggressive wiggling it came right up / nothing broken
