Korg ESX fixer upper

Post by Silverfish » Sat Feb 11, 2012 11:08 am

Hey team-

You're always very helpful around these parts, and I'm looking for a little repair advice. I've got a Korg ESX that had knob jitters and a blown fuse. Now it's got severe knob jitters, a stuck note, and all potentiometers are only going from 0-74. I may have botched the fuse replacement.

I hate this thing so much. I have never regretted buying a piece of gear as much as this. I want to sell it, but it's worth virtually nothing in the state that it's in. I might as well try and fix it.

I'm wondering if when I replaced the fuse, I shorted something out, hence all of the spooky voodoo. Or, the stuck note is caused by a wonky touch ribbon.

Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had to replace the fuse in mine and it is definitely not something i recommend doing unless you have experience with smd components. did you check for any solder bridges around the fuse that may be shorting? should be visible with a magnifying glass and a bright light. if there are any, you can probably clean them up with some copper wick or a solder sucker.

for the knob jitter issue, i read on the korg forum that another person fixed his by putting a sheet of paper between the circuit boards to stop the top one from contacting the bottom one. damned if i can't find the thread though.

don't know what to say about the stuck note, but maybe if you get the other issues sorted it will work itself out.

edit - found it. - http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=70030

The fuse can be replaced even by almost anyone. I paid $10 for the fix on a local electric service shop...
