Roland U20 PCM Card Not Ready

Post by groovechild » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:10 pm

Hi

I recently purchased a used Roland U20 to complete a project, also I purchased a Sound Library Card for it ( SN-U110-04), but when I insert the card in to either of the two PCM Card slots I am prompted with "Checking PCM Card" and nothing else happens.

I can't access the card to get the sounds, as when I press the Card Button on the U20, I am them prompted with "Card Not Ready"

Am I doing something wrong or is the card at fault, how do i check?

Any advice is sincerely appreciated.

I'll be damned... I just noticed myself that I can't access the cards either on my U-220! I got them with a CM-64, were the midi channels were sufficient to access them, but it doesn't work like that with a U-220... Since I don't edit sounds and merely use the presets on most of my synths, I never noticed that before!

If anyone knows how to access those SN-U110-xx cards on a U-20 or U-220, please stand up!

From memory, you need to manually point the card slot to the number on the card, i.e. if you have a card slot looking for card SN U110 01, and you have inserted card 02, it will read "Card not ready" - the slots aren't smart.

And how do you point the card manually?

Ok, from memory, when you select the waveform whilst editing the tone, you'll scroll through the numbers of the waves, i.e I 001 A.Piano 1 - where I is internal memory, 001 the wave number, and the name of the wave till you get to end of the I group, then it'll go something like C (where C is card memory), 01 - which is card number, etc. I think you move the cursor to the number after the C till it matches (or else it just scrolls itself). It will read the dreaded "card not ready" until the number matches one of the two cards you'll have inserted. Once the numbers match, you'll then be able to select waveforms from that card. I'm working from memory, but I think thats right. Let me know how you go.

To access the sounds of a PCM Sound Library Card plugged into a U-20;

Press [ JUMP ] [ NUMBER 2 ] and the LCD Display shows
Edit/Timbre[1]/Tone
Tone = (x)-(yyy) (zzzzzzzzzz)

x = PCM Card Number. For example, "SN-U110-11 Sound Effects" is PCM Card #11
yyy = Tone Number on the PCM Card. For example, 004
zzzzzzzzzz = Tone Name on the PCM Card. For example, WATERPHONE
Use the [ ▻ ] CURSOR to select x and it will start blinking

Press [ △ ] VALUE [ ▽ ] until one of the PCM Card Numbers (x) appears and starts blinking
Use the [ ▻ ] CURSOR to select the Tone Number on the PCM Card (yyy) and it will start blinking
Press [ △ ] VALUE [ ▽ ] to cycle through the available Tone Numbers (yyy) and Tone Names (zzzzzzzzzz) on the PCM card

Note: To speed up this process, instead of using [ △ ] VALUE [ ▽ ], you can use the C2 Slider to cycle through the Tone names

For our example of using the SN-U110-11 Sound Effects PCM Card, the LCD display will read as;

Edit/Timbre[1]/Tone
Tone = 11-004 WATERPHONE

11 = The PCM Card Number (SN-U110-11 Sound Effects)
004 = The Tone Number on the PCM Card
WATERPHONE = The name of the Tone on the PCM Card
If the LCD display looks something similar to what is shown below and says "No Card!", you will need to change (x) to match up with the PCM Card number(s)
Edit/Timbre[1]/Tone
Tone = (x)-(yyy) No Card!
