Recieved broken synth in the mail, what to do???

Post by STRING_MACHINES » Sat Jan 19, 2013 8:25 am

ok, so i bought a synth on ebay from some guy in ukraine. Looked at pictures of it and it looked in great condition, he even said it was in cosmetic condiition and everything just fine.

Ok fast forward to delivery day. I got home from work and i seen a big box lying there at my doorstep!, it was my synth!. I was very excited, but a bit confused why usps would leave a $500 package on a door step. Didnt think much of it after that, proceeded to un-package my synth. As i was picking out of the box i heard some thing small moving inside the synth, pulled it out and noticed that the right panel was broken!, after further inspection i noticed that the "power" light that indicates synth is on, had fallen off. Turned it on and some of the knobs werent working, 1 key wasnt working and the "string" & "organ" sections werent workin neither!.

After realizing how much damage was done, i decided to just send it back and get a full refund. But this guy says i have to pay shipping!, which will probably come out to $200. Why should i pay shipping for a item he didnt ship correctly?.

what should i do?

Same thing happened to me! I took a hit on shipping, but paypal was nice enough to cover some of the shipping cost.

it was in a home made box, put some cardboard together. There wasnt much cushion inside to protect it

Not encased in several layers of bubblewrap? What's the seller's ebay name?

no not at all, it was wrapped maybe once in that real thin white sheet with pieces of broken starfoam wedges that where all broken.

sounds like this was entirely the sellers fault then. either way, any responsible seller will pack items with lots of padding to withstand rough handling, because thats the norm with UPS, USPS, etc.
sellers who underpack items should be held responsible and not allowed to damage more gear.

The key isnt even that big its a 49 key!. And i got to ship it by the 27th according to eBay!.... thats tomorrow and thats a sunday.

In the name of schadenfreude, I find this remarkably entertaining...

Some parcel handlers suck in the fact they're extremely rough with the items they drop off. I live in a place where I dread anything delivered by UPS. Its going to be broken in some way when I open it.

Given the s**t-pile of shipping back - and not knowing the synth and its value - maybe better just to keep it and have it repaired.

This s**t just burns me up.

f**k assholes that don't know how to properly pack... then the lack of realistic options and the process of everybody passing the buck.

I've gone though though a simlar thing. Here's what I recommend:

Take TONS of clear pictures that illustrate the extent of the damage... if you can, use things like depth and perspective to really show off how the bits are busted up. Post all of those pictured here. Also, send those pictures to the seller and if you can to eBay/Paypal.

Get on the phone with eBay and really stand your ground about this. Make it clear that you will not pay return shipping as you paid for a synth in fine condition and this is clearly negligence and ineptitude on the seller's part. Make sure to grab the original photos from the original listing for reference... you may need to use them for comparison.

Continue to make it clear than the seller should refund you your money and take care of the shipping back if he wants it... He might not... he may agree to a partial refund. In my case I got estimates for the repairs and was able to get UPS to pay up. I made such a stink and made it clear that I was exposing the exchange on a public forum. In my case the seller was on my side and was also pissed that UPS damaged the synth... he gave UPS s**t on his end as well. Maybe you can get the seller on your side... that is if it seems it might be an only option. He probably believes his packing job was sufficient and might argue in your favor as such... I dunno.

Don't let any of these people deflect responsibility. Hold them all accountable and stand your ground. Expose them publicly. It might be the only leverage you have.

Can I ask, how much was the synth itself? Would you mind linking the finished auction here?

We're on your side... Good luck.
