Fatar keybed squeaky noises

Post by Yekuku » Fri Oct 25, 2013 10:23 am

Hi guys,
I am restoring a virus indigo and I have problems with squeaky noises and hard to press keys.
I have narrowed the problem to the rubber keystops that near all fatar keybeds are using, I cleaned them but still no joy.
It seems that the previous owner used "not so plastic friendly" grease that reacted with the rubber and caused the rubber to expand slightly. This expansion is not visible with naked eye. Now the rubber makes contact with the key lock thus increasing the resistance and producing squeaky noises.
does anyone know if it is possible to get new rubber keystops? I know that i cant get them from fatar as they dont even reply to customer emails.
Do you know of any magic rubber grease that would do the work?
Any ideas about how to shrink the rubber key stops ? I thought about shaving them with a razor, but I would appreciate an easier approach
many thanks .

SYNTAUR list used ones - they don't say how manu they have in stock:

You might try gentle bath in soap and water, dry well, a rinse in denatured alcohol, dry again, then soak in liquid silicone.

A long shot:
KEYPARTS.uk is a licenced seller of Fatar keybeds - you might try them.

Unfortunately still no joy :( I ll try to find some liquid silicone and check it. I have used red rubber grease but the problem persists.

I have sent them an email, fingers crossed :)

I tried to shave the rubber bushings with a razor but it is beyond my skills.
I am thinking of touching slightly the bushings sides with a soldering iron, this way I might be able shrink the rubber sides.

i ll keep you updated about the results.
many thanks

Ok here is the update:
Keyparts does not stock any bushings.
I have searched everywhere but I could not find any new bushings available.
Tried to slightly burn the bushings to get them to shrink, but unfortunately they expand! lol!
I managed to find a broken fatar cmk midi controller, they use exactly the same keys & bushings with the virus indigo , I swapped the bushings and now I am happy man :D

Omg. This has happened to me too on my Korg Triton extreme 88. Is taken it apart to clean and refurb as it was second hand and 13 years old now. I wiped and regressed with white lithium grease. All was fab. Few days latter stuff, solid and sticking keys!!!! But only the white notes. I’ve tried everything except removal and simmering. So I’ve gone and big for a studiologic / Fatar studio 900 on eBay in hope I can do this swap. It uses the TP10 where I have the TP40 but I hope they have same rubber key stops? Anyone know?

White lithium grease, great for wheel bearings.

White silicon grease, great for keyboards.

Yes. Discovered this! So I got a Studiologic 880 for £60 off eBay.its a TP-40 albeit 1999 vs my korg 2005. Replacing the white key bushes with the donor parts. They’re individual which is better. My original now enlarged ones were all connected. These must be moulded on the keybed. So I’ve removed every last trace of lithium shite, and the silicone elixir is doing good.
