Does anyone have a Manikin Memotron service manual?

Post by Purity_Control » Tue Aug 26, 2014 2:06 pm

I need to take my Memotron in for repair as there's an issue with the 'tape' select knob, for some strange reason positions A and C on it no longer work although position B does. So I can only load up one sound at a time.

Good news is I have a regular tech guy who is great with gear, but he really could use the service manual.

Not so good news is I've never had a reply out of Manikin support before and aren't anticipating one this time either.

I don't suppose someone has the service manual as a pdf? or can link me to it?

Have tried google already, it's not my friend today.

Have you got in touch with them on the phone? Some people tend to be really slow at responding to emails.

You might also want to try to get in touch with Klaus Hoffmann Hoock through his mindala.de website, maybe he can help you further or put you in touch with someone in the know.

Do you load sounds from the CD-ROM or from the CFC? Maybe there are some volume values scrambled up?

dang, bummer that it's ace performance feature ~and what makes it more desirable than the m4000D, imho~ has gone south on you.
my condolences.

How are you attempting to contact them?

Please let us know how this turns out. I've got one here, too. It sounds awesome and is really nicely made, but if the support is crappy then I am not very inclined to take it out on gigs - and gigability is the chief benefit of a memotron to me, anyways.
I can work around the abysmally slow loading times, but if product support is c**p then there's only one thing I can do about that - move on. :|
Haven't seen the service manual myself, btw.

here's hoping they get their act together and help you.
keep us posted, eh?

I tried emailing their support address about 2 years back with a query about removing the knobs, as you know the lower 3 have a clear plastic disk around them and I had some little bits of, well something under there. They look like they're held on by a tiny screw that should unscrew with a precision screwdriver, only they don't and I wanted to get info rather than try anything creative. Never got a reply.

Emailed the same address again a few months back when the select control stopped working properly and also never got a reply.

Have tried copying in their info address today to see if that helps.

Only other option is to ring them and hope they speak enough English to be understood, as my German goes about as far as asking where the shizehaus is.

Now this made me spew coffee all over my computer  -- brilliant! Do you happen to like the famous German EM performer Klause Shize?

The first time I said that it wasn't a gag, I was asking for directions to the loo at a German Christkindelmarkt and when they didn't understand, those words popped into my head... I said them right about the same time as it dawned on me that probably isn't the polite terminology to use.

Erm, probably not, no. But it brought you relief :).

That is all that matters.

Just to let everyone know, I have Manikin a ring on Tuesday and spoke with Thorsten, who does indeed have excellent English.

Seem to have a dialog going with them now to troubleshoot and see what we need to do - so fingers crossed we're getting there.

Interestingly, from the tests Thorsten advised me to do, I found out that the Memotron will still play all 3 tape sounds just fine over MIDI using the mod wheel to select, and still send mod controller data from the tape selector switch.

Seems like there's something going on internal to the Memotron where the mod data from that particular knob is getting ignored.

Update for anyone who is interested.

The last email I got from Manikin said

"This looks like an defective Pot, or a problem with the MicroController.
The best way is that we fix it here in Berlin."

I'm not keen to ship it to Germany and back as it's heavy and shipping here is extortionate, have asked Manikin if they could advise my regular repair guy how to do it and once again no reply. I'm also not filled with confidence after all of the times they've not replied to emails, I don't mean that as a slur but I'm gonna feel sick to my stomach if they're sat on my Memotron and not replying to emails, makes me way too nervous.

So another six weeks on, I've dropped it in with my regular repair guy to see what he can do, fingers crossed it's just the pot.

For context, I also have a Dopefer module that needs repair and Dieter Doepfer has been super, quick replies, informative, doesn't publish full service manuals but has let me have the scematics for the section where he thinks the problem is... totally different experience.

Final update on this, and a thumbs up for the totally awesome Abacus Electronics of Leeds, England.

This is the man who does not do digital, who has managed to repair both the Doepfer module (broken track on circuit board) and the Memotron (bad pot).

Only difference is the pot is somewhat looser and doesn't have the centre and end detents I think it had before, well I am not complaining as it is working again!

Manikin should be ashamed of themselves.
