Oberheim Discovery

Post by Macha0n » Fri Nov 21, 2014 4:05 pm

Hi guys,

I'm glad you've got a section called 'HELP!'- seems very apt. I've been going through my parents house and discovered a couple of cases full of Oberheim bits and pieces in the loft- I'm really not sure whether it's all one synth or bits of two, and whether or not I could build it back up into a complete unit (I'm not even going to broach the subject of how yet!).

Total haul so far is as follows:

7x Synthesizer Expander Module
2x Polyphonic Keyboard (1 in bits)
1x Output Module
1x Expander #4
1x 'CHASE' branded body/rack/frame with various PSUs and a 7 octave keyboard
1x Big, scary pile of wires.
2x Black Cases, Neither of which are big enough for a 7 Oct. keyboard.

I'll try and upload photos soon- need to carefully extricate everything first!

Any advice on what I've got/what I need to do with it would be very much appreciated.

Cheers.

It seems a very interesting place!
The only thing sure for now is that it's a couple thousands $ worth! Did anyone in your family was a musician, a retailor or a sales rep? How long was that material there? Pretty unusual find...
Considering parting away from:

-DSI Mopho

That's a bit of a goldmine you've unearthed there, one of those "how come my parents never had..." kind of situations

Congrats.

It sounds like it could be one of these

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

SOO Uuuuhh where is you said you live again ? Just joking of course . Wow you did find yourself a awesome discovery indeed. That's very cool - congrats. Here's a link to one fellows Oberheim restoration. Hope you understand that it is a rare batch of modules- use a lot of care in doing the work - or - who you have do the work.

Hi again,

So, I gather these are pretty nice things then? I thought they might be high-end gear- the build quality is seriously impressive.

As a bit of background, my dad used to run a studio- sadly he's been suffering from Alzheimer's for the last few years, so I can't ask him about any of this stuff anymore. There used to be loads of gear flying around when I was little- I know he had one of those ARPs- it took up an entire wall. I used to mess about with the sliders and get in loads of trouble! Also a Fairlight something, I think- used to love the pen-touch screen and big disks.

Unfortunately, when dad started to get ill he gave almost everything to one of those auction companies on a handshake, and then they went bust and he never saw a penny. But that's another story.

Anyhoo, here are a couple of pics to be going on with- a friend's coming round on Tuesday to help me extricate the rest! I assume the only reason this stuff escaped was because everyone had forgotten it was up there.

One thought I had, because I know what my dad used to be like- is it at all possible he was trying to create some sort of monster double-sized synth? Those pics look exactly like the cases I've got, but as I said before, for some reason there's a 7 octave keyboard connected up to some of it.

Cheers for the help guys, I'm in a bit over my head here!

Hi,

Well, that took longer than I thought! It's been crazy in the run up to Christmas- I hope everyone's having a good December!

Here's a little more of what I've managed to unearth:

Also, I'm up to 8 SEMs now, plus 2 Polyphonic Keyboards, 2 Expander #4, 2 Output Modules and one Polyphonic Synthesizer Programmer.

I think I've abandoned the notion of putting it back together myself!

You should send an email along with those pics to Tom Oberheim who is still very much alive. He could probably ID what that thing really was and who might be able to get it put back together for you.

This would be worth a lot. I've never ever seen an 88 note SEM keyboard.

There's a joint in the middle: it may simply be two keyboards put together...

Oh well spotted. So it's an unfinished project then. Hence all the bits.
