.syx to .Txx
Hey! I recently bought some Yamaha SY77 sounds online, and was wondering if there was any free way to convert them from MIDI SysEx format to SY77 disk format. My USB-to-MIDI cable has a problem and I do have a computer with a floppy drive, so I could make a disk myself if I could just get them into the right format.
EDIT: Solved, thanks to Sonus!

Get a MIDI interface that can handle sysex, and use MIDIox or similar to transmit it to the SY77. Some of the really cheap USB to MIDI cables can't do it.

Re: .syx to .Txx
My USB to MIDI cable is actually a pretty good one. It has separate "In" and "Out" MIDI cables and a converter in the middle. Unfortunately, my "out" prongs came undone from the rest of the cable after my stupid self moved the keyboard with the cable still attached. Luckily, nothing stuck in the keyboard's MIDI ports; unluckily, counterintuitive as it may seem, I apparently have to have the cable hooked up to "MIDI Out" for the SY77 to receive a SysEx dump. (I tried it with the "In" hooked up to the Out port, as well as to the In port, and neither worked.) I've done everything as multiple web pages have indicated I should to perform an SY77 SysEx dump, and the 'board hasn't received anything. Bear in mind that I've performed this operation before with no issue, using the same program (SysEx Librarian) on the same computer (MacBook) as I have been using here. Ultimately I think I'm just going to have to get another cable.madtheory wrote:Get a MIDI interface that can handle sysex, and use MIDIox or similar to transmit it to the SY77. Already have, and there are some cheap ones. I just don't want to wait. lolmadtheory wrote:Yup! Take a look on eBaythefonz003 wrote:Ultimately I think I'm just going to have to get another cable.

Re: .syx to .Txx
So, now I have my new USB-to-MIDI cable and the keyboard seems incapable of receiving a SysEx dump (either that, or there's something wrong with the brand-new cable). I've never had any real issues with this 'board before---it's been very dependable for the nearly six years I've owned it. I'm plugging the MIDI-out of the cable into the MIDI-in of the keyboard and turning "bulk protect" off, but still nothing. I've tried using both Elektron C6 and SysEx Librarian to perform the bulk dumps, and the keyboard hasn't received anything from either. I'm quite frustrated, especially since the seller has *still* not sent me my free floppy, over a month after I purchased the patch bank.

Re: .syx to .Txx
Does MIDI in and out need to be connected for handshaking? DO you need to adjust the transmission speed from SysEx librarian?
Re: .syx to .Txx

No problem for conversion if you can upload the files?

Re: .syx to .Txx
You mean you can convert it (.syx to .txx OR .mid to .txx) or I can convert it myself? Either way, how does one go about this?Sonus wrote:

Re: .syx to .Txx
I suppose I could connect both MIDI ports. I've never heard of that being necessary though. It wasn't necessary when I transmitted patch banks via a MIDI-to-USB cord in the past. Ditto transmission speed---I used SysEx Librarian in the past with no problem. I think the only real difference is that this cord has a slightly different configuration. So, either the cord configuration is wrong, or there's something wrong with the MIDI port(s) in my keyboard.madtheory wrote:Does MIDI in and out need to be connected for handshaking? Re: .syx to .Txx
OK. As I said earlier, there are some USB MIDI cords that can't handle sysex.

Re: .syx to .Txx
The lights on the cable are flashing as if it were hard at work. Guess it's possible though. One thing I've noticed is that the program (whether it's SysEx Librarian or C6) makes me select "Port 1" or "Port 2" as the send destination with this cable, whereas with my old cable it was just "USB/MIDI cable."madtheory wrote:OK. Re: .syx to .Txx
When I have everything hooked up properly and click "Play" on SysEx Librarian, the keyboard just says "ERROR: MIDI DATA ERROR." Maybe the guy sold me a faulty bank?

Re: .syx to .Txx
Yes it could be a faulty bank, or a MIDI speed problem (too fast), or a conflict with another USB driver. Easy enough to verify a faulty bank- see if you can send what's in the synth to the librarian, save it and send it back.
