Sync Minivova arp to DR 770 clock???

Post by rukiddnme29 » Tue Sep 22, 2015 7:11 pm

im trying to sync my mininova's arp to my DR 770. I've tried it both ways from each instruments manuals. Either way, one of the instruments doesn't make a sound when synced to midi. For instance, when I set the clock source on the mini move to Midi, the arp won't play at all why the 770 is playing. What am I missing? I've tried it so many ways. It has to be something simple that I'm overlooking. Thanks for any input!

1. Connect DR770 MIDI OUT to Mininova MIDI IN

2. Set Mininova to use MIDI clock

3. Set DR770 sync to use INT

That should work.

I did that. But the arp won't play. It does nothing. So annoying. I'll try it again when I get home.

The two obvious things to check would be are you playing a key on the mininova, and do you have both audio outs connected to your mixer.

Lol, yeah, I'm playing a key, but no, not both outs to mixer. I can try that.

I suspect that he's going to find his problem goes away when he plugs the audio outs of both devices in. ;)

I have both devices plugged in. I thought you meant both outs on mininova. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm pretty inexperienced with midi. Ive never had a problem with it before. It's always been so simple. I don't get it.

OK, so it's still not working, correct?

Do you have a MIDI interface for your computer? If so, try connecting the 770 to that and use a MIDI utility like MIDI-OX to make sure the 770 really is sending out the clock.

You did read this in the manual I hope:
Most sequencers do not transmit MIDI Clock while they are stopped. Synchronisation of the MiniNova to MIDI Clock will only be possible while the sequencer is actually recording or playing. In the absence of an external clock, the tempo will flywheel and will assume the last known incoming MIDI Clock value.
In other words, the 770 may not send any clock unless it's sequencer is playing.

Also this:
Midi – synchronisation will only be to an external MIDI clock connected to the MIDI input socket. If no clock is detected, the tempo “flywheels” to the last- known clock rate.
• Auto – when no external MIDI clock source is present the MiniNova will default to the internal MIDI clock. Tempo (BPM) will be that set by the TEMPO knob. If an external MIDI clock is present the MiniNova will synchronise to it.
So if no clock is received at all, in MIDI mode the arpeggiator and anything else that syncs to clock (LFO, delay effects?) should be dead. In Auto, they will work even if no clock is coming in, but the tempo is controlled by the Mininova. Have you tried the Auto mode?

Finally this:
USB – synchronisation will only be set to the external MIDI clock received via the USB connection. If no clock is detected, the tempo “flywheels” to the last-known clock rate.
You are not using USB mode, correct?

Cables should ALWAYS be the first thing you check =D>

Oh sorry, you'd be surprised how often people post here not realising that midi doesn't transmit audio through to the other device's audio outs, my apologies for assuming that. Glad to hear it's all sorted now! Bad cables are the worst.
