Zappa key players

not much talk here of the great Zappa keymen over the years
Particularly George Duke and Tommy Mars.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=zerqXtf6Cas

Here Tommy Mars is seen improvising during "Pound for the Brown" in the Baby Snakes concert film, playing what looks like a Minimoog, Prophet 5 and CS-80. Is that also a white-faced Odyssey atop the CS-80?

George Duke was undoubtably one of the giants of 70s rock & jazz keyboards. I'm sure he used a Mini, an Odyssey and a Rhodes, but I really don't know much else. Particularly on the One Size Fits All and Roxy & Elsewhere album albums.

Here's George Duke in the '74 Zappa band performing "Inca Roads":

Others I remember : Don Preston, Bobby Martin, Peter Wolf, Allan Zevod, and Ian Underwood

How about Zappa himself? I know it was composed/programmed more than actually "played", but his Synclavier work boggles the mind ;-)

cheers,
ew

Nice video!

I didn't see any CS-80, Prophet 5 or Odyssey in there but I spotted two Minimoogs, a Roland SH-1000, what appears to be an Arp/Solina string ensemble, a Yamaha electric piano and --standing tall in the background-- Zappa's big E-mu modular.

goods eyes, Micke...I saw the YAMAHA and assumed it was CS-80 - wasn't that Mars' main board around 79-80?

I actually don't know (haven't heard of the guy until now in fact) but I think this footage is from late 1977.

I saw him with Banned From Utopia (with many other zappa alumni) ...gosh I guess about 9 years ago or so.
