I used a Moog Voyager RME, DSI Poly Evolver (Rack), a Studio Electronics Omega 8, Roland R-8M drum module, and a Lexicon MPX-500 and TC Electronic Fireworx for (huge) reverbs.

A quick rundown...

Voyager: underlying drone and radio S&H bleeps
Omega 8: smooth pads and FM bell sounds
Poly Evolver: CS-80 lead
R-8M: claps, clicks, and booms

I also ran the Omega through a Moogerfooger ring modulator, although it was very light. I like to use it for the fullness of the overdrive more than anything else.

I'll be sure to post anything else that sounds similar in the future.

You need to add a little delay in there, it's just a little too dry to my ears, especially
on the DSI PE (CS-80 lead) as it cuts-off too suddenly, a little delay will make it fade
naturally. However it's a nice impersonation of Vangelis' sound.

The Poly Evolver lead sounds a little too thin to be a CS-80, but it's damn close!

About the CS-80 lead, I think that short of owning an actual CS-80 the best you can do is get close. It's such a unique and powerful instrument and it seems to be the one sound that I'll always be trying to capture with "lesser" equipment (not to mention that the lead sound is just one of many wonderful sounds the CS-80 can create).

I once owned a CS-50 and it was possibly the thinnest sounding synth I'd ever had, but also the most expressive and dynamic. It's a shame that they're so heavy and unwieldly though. While sending it in for repairs once (a high-pitched whine found its way into the signal path) I gave up and ended up selling it because I couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle of hauling it around again. Also, the power cord comes out from the bottom of the synth, meaning it has to be placed on a stand, which was a problem in my small studio.

Maybe someday I'll build a modular that's fine-tuned to get those old CS sounds. That being said, among the Voyager, the Omega, the Poly Evolver, and some other synths I have sitting around, the Evolver does the best job of capturing the CS spirit.
