FM8 remixes

Post by CS_TBL » Wed May 13, 2009 2:13 pm

Rather than a thread per tune, I'm sticking to this one from now on. These are all pure-FM8 remixes. Made with multiple instances of FM8, and nothing else. Not even an EQ or effect from the DAW. Purpose is to show that FM(8) can do more than just bells, basses and odd stuff.. :P

--- previously released ---

Hymne

Chariots of Fire

Crockett's Theme

Second Rendez-Vous

Adagio for Strings

Magic Fly

--- new! ---

Enola Gay

Twin Peaks

(note the cymbals, and the transitions between the horn notes!)

Re: FM8 remixes

The basics of a sound are usually done rather quick, after that it takes quite a while to get a sound really right. And with 'right' I mean: correct sounding across the keyboard's full range, correct sounding across the whole velocity range and correct sounding when dealing with controllers. But it differs per sound. The flute in Music of the Night only took my 20 minutes to make it the way it is. The strings took a little longer, and there has been a slight evolution in that sound. In Adagio for Strings, I used 5 panned instances (to suggest a typical strings setup with violins left and basses right). In my latest version this panning is built into the sound, so, spread panning across the keyboard.

Some day, perhaps this summer, I'll attempt to make FM8 remixes of Holst's The Planets. I already tried Mars and Mercury, both downloaded midifiles from the net. While the initial impression is decent, you can hear that it isn't as detailed as really recreating it and exploiting all the possibilities of FM8. Why The Planets? 1: it rocks, 2: atm I've FM8 versions of most orchestral instruments, so it'd be a real kicker to try them in practice. :D

A few instruments left on my todo are pizzicato and slapping a string with the back of a bow (Mars, opening).

Does Native Instruments actually know of this already?

Also, I don't know if I've ever asked you already, but have you ever tried Rob Papen's "Blue"? :)

Well, they should know, as I'm spamming the NI FM8 forum with features/bugs and all these remixes.

Haven't heard of Blue yet, I'll have a look into it. I dabbled a bit with some other Papen synth before, some while ago, but if anything (and that can be said about a LOT of VSTi's) it was heavy on the CPU. One thing that is often not mentioned, when a discussion is about FM8, is that it's really really really cheap on the CPU. I mean, the amount of FM8 voices I'm using in these remakes is really out of any proportion.. :P Not just because I have lots of instruments playing, but also because of the many unison voices I'm using.

Ok, just tried Blue, and while I haven't delved into it, the fact that one voice uses about 8% CPU time on my system is the ultimate spoiler. The given presets were rather pointless for me, but that's true for any synth, including FM8. :P

Where FM8 scores big time is the combination of vast editing and the cheap CPU usage. There aren't many softsynths that have both these artifacts.

Very nice work! Clair de Lune is one of my favorites. I still think Tomita's version is one of the best. He really takes his time and plays it very subtlety, stretching the tempo. I like your "Bladerunner"-esque approach, though! :)

I'm really starting to get deep into FM synthesis. It's been very enjoyable. Are any of your patches available for sale?

None for sale! Sorry, not selling my offspring. :P Besides it's way more fun to make all these sounds yourself!

The Blade Runner element was intentional, Memories of Green, yea.. ^^
