Been thinking about going with a hardware sampler.

I choose the Roland S-550. I chose it because it has enough outputs (eight) to assign almost every drum to a dedicated output for individual processing. It also gets points for having a (somewhat hard to find) step seqiencer package. The filters are very good as well, and the graphical editing is a very cool feature, if you can find one of the coveted mice for it. The Akai S-612 can create interesting sounds, but it is way too limited to be any good as a beatbox or drum sampler. It cannot multisample, and the six voice polyphony can be very limiting at times. On top of that the sample times are very short at all but the crunchiest sample rates. Finally, the QuickDisks are an absolute pain in the a*s to find and use.

Check out the Ensoniq Mirage too. Cheap, 8-bit and mono (IIRC they also did a 'fake' stereo version) but it has analogue CEM filters. Good for grainy loops or dropping other lo-fi sounds. I wouldn't have it as your only sampler though if you want to do beats on it, as that mono out becomes a painful limitation. Great as an extra crackly old beast though.

Rumor has it that the mouse for the S550 is compatible with MSX mice, and although these are difficult to find themselves, they are somewhat easier to get hold of, and there is also a PC-MSX mouse converter circuit floating around on the web somewhere, so in theory, with a little work, you should be able to use a regular PC mouse with the S550...Analog Freak wrote:the graphical editing is a very cool feature, if you can find one of the coveted mice for it.
