Drum Breaks
Where do you fellas find your drum breaks? While I await the arrival of my MPC 500, I've been going through my Ipod/old cassettes trying to find drum breaks. I've had no difficulty finding other things I want to sample but drum breaks is a bit tougher. Is it against the rules to take drum breaks from already hip hop songs?

i'd say it's pretty weak to sample drums from hip hop, but--hey--there ARE no rules. do it in a cool way and the world will beat a path to your door.
as for me, i vinyl dive for breaks (old r&b, soul, disco), and collect just about anything offbeat for vocal/other samples.
i also keep an ear open at all times for sample-able/loopable beats, individual hits, fills without other tracks, etc.
per breaks--there are times when a touch of non-drum track sounds kind of cool in the sample. also, remember that eq can be your friend for isolating a drum sound. and remember, too, that eq can also be used to create drum sounds--isolate low-freq's for kicks, high-freq's for "snares," "hats," etc.
above all, be creative!

I just don't remember the name, the site is black and has green letters..

are you referring to me? (about posting the free breaks on the internet, if not SORRYthestreets wrote:Oh yeah and...
sample libraries are off-limits...i personally feel as though thats a p***y way to do things.

seriously?
would you bother with going through the SAME records that have the ones that samples on the internet have, again?
I'd rather just use the ones I can find in vinyl crates that have probably never been used before (I don't try to find funk, soul and r&b) and then use the ones on the net..
plus most of the albums that have the famous breaks are pretty rare and expensive..

then sampling pre made beats must be just as lame.thestreets wrote:Oh yeah and...

i personally get all my drum samples from tapes of old noise jams. set up 10 radios playing at once, several power tools, a few things to beat on with sticks, some yelling, and throwing s**t on the floor for 20 minutes, then i scroll back through and cut out the good bits.
Brains can be used like a "stress ball," but only once.

I know, I figured, that's why I made sure it's off-limits. I mean I found one in a hot hot heat song that would be cool. That's a rock song so i could use that i think.
As for sample libraries...that's just my opinion. I can completely understand what you're saying there hageir, I just throughly enjoy going through the true records and stuff because I find it exciting. When something I could sample pops up, it's a good feeling.

I don't see the difference between using a sample cd and asking us where to find breaks. You have to dig in your music collection or go out and buy more records to find this stuff...it is hard work. Why not make your own? Just sample individual sounds and then make your own drum beats...most people do that nowadays. Or, use drum machine samples.thestreets wrote:Oh yeah and...

Yeah good point JS....
I was more just curious as to where you fellas get your breaks from...so I could see If i'm looking in the same places. I'm really not to big on sample flipping. I feel like you can sample and old song do some s**t with it and make a new song but when you make a song out a a song that was already made out of an old song...that doesn't work for me. That's why I don't want to keep using breaks that everyones already used on the internet.

Myself, I use drum machine samples, my machinedrum, or I sample from CDs and records...never complete drum loops though...just hits. Then I sequence them using the MPC or MDUW. However, I've always worked this way even when I used Reason or Fruity Loops.thestreets wrote:Yeah good point JS....
