trance drum ideas
i'm looking for something new for trance-type drums, something that will compliment my machinedrum, i already went the analog route, and wasn't what i was looking for.
i'm kind of thinking maybe a korg emx or quasimidi 309
what do you guys think?

what are you missing in your sound that you want to add?
quasimidi make quality stuff but i haven't used them longer than a 1/2 hr at a time so no expertise here. similar to the emx, but from a previous era. they get the hiccups unless MIDI-slaved, so be wary.
i think you should also consider something you can sample/load new sounds into.
re: emx . i say go for the esx 1st, and then pick up an emx later if you dig it. i've had both for years. emx is aggro mostly, and limited to digisynth and PCM drums. esx is smoother and warmer imo, uses just samples, albeit sample management is slow - but for drums alone it rocks and the fx section(same on emx but esx is somehow more inviting and better-sounding than emx to my ears) is a blast.
but if you just want slamming aggro, then emx is the ticket.
in pure sound quality the spectralis is IT if you can spare the dosh and don't mind some menu-diving.
and of course there's the mighty RS7000. tough to beat although some say the MV Rolands are their favorite by far. But no xOx grid there.

i forgot about the rs7000, can you comment on the included drum sounds at all?shaft9000 wrote:what are you missing in your sound that you want to add?

can't comment because i don't have one. there's some demos on YouTube and a few mp3s you can google to get an idea.
i will be getting an rs7k before long though...the esx is best used as a custom soundset drummachine & fx box i find...for full-fledged sequencing & sampling the rs7k should be much better. it's got a slightly cut-down a3000 engine after all.

get an emulator....destroy some breakbeats w/ gain...layer them behind your machine drum doing tr type sounds...works awesome for trance/acid/acid breaks/tech/dnb
altho i think the 909/emulator combo is better....the machinedrum is a bad mamba jamba no doubt...but it just doesnt have thunder of say a 909 or a jomox clone(xbase/airbase)...where the machinedrum excels IMO is at the more wacked out percussive sounds....like what the dx7IIFD would do if u put some powerful blotter in its floppy drive and started programming percussion 8) ...just my opinion tho...im one of those ppl that had a machine drum, played w/ it for a few months, sampled it, and re-sold it.

You don't get a Machinedrum for static soundsnick_emulated wrote:get an emulator....destroy some breakbeats w/ gain...layer them behind your machine drum doing tr type sounds...works awesome for trance/acid/acid breaks/tech/dnb![]()

um, I am confused...due to the nature of the MD being a powerful sequencer / and a synth that lets you dial in such a wide range of percussive, I don't know how you could effectively sample it...I suppose the kits are fun and interesting in their own right...I spend my time on the MD making my own sounds...nick_emulated wrote:...im one of those ppl that had a machine drum, played w/ it for a few months, sampled it, and re-sold it.
What about investing in some filters to pair up with the MD? I would say check out the Jomox stuff if you haven't {I know you thought the analog thing wasn't good for you, but they are the other boxes I would really like...or start saving for the DSI/Linn box when it finally gets here...

they aren't even close to being the same thing. and while the MD can cover some of the same ground as the EMX, it won't replace it (and vice versa, of course).Soundwave wrote:The EMX is just a beginners Machinedrum as there's nowt on there that the Elektron can't already do and then some.

sampled loops, then chop-chop-chopped them up w/ zero-x beat creator, then scsi them to the emulator for re-sequencing.hyphen nation wrote:um, I am confused...due to the nature of the MD being a powerful sequencer / and a synth that lets you dial in such a wide range of percussive, I don't know how you could effectively sample it..nick_emulated wrote:...im one of those ppl that had a machine drum, played w/ it for a few months, sampled it, and re-sold it.
the MD is a good drum machine....just not my cup of tea...and soundwave....i wasnt really using it for static sounds....i was using it to compliment the 909 and mpc(mostly w/ crazy metallic sounds, like i used to get from a dx200)...ive had a 309 before...and aside from its usefulness live(having a knob that can change the sample is the most brilliant thing about that box), its no-where near what the 909 or even a jomox can do sonically...a 309 next to a 909 is like comparing a fiero to a ferrari....both are fun, but the ferrari is the superior machine.
