between these three which would you rather have and why?

Post by bionic muffins » Mon Aug 04, 2008 2:12 am

korg ms-10
yamaha cs-10
roland sh-09

i am looking for a new monophonic synth that does basses and leads well, for some simple lines to help support melody in songs. we play dark pop/indie rock type stuff.

any insight is appreciated.

Indeed it does.

Personally I'd rather have the MS-10 cause I like the sound of it more. That won't help you decide though, because you might like one of the other ones more. You should buy the one you like the sound of the most.

While I agree with Stab (about hearing all of them), I would encourage you to try the CS-10. I've had the other two, and while I've never had a CS-10, I do have the CS-15. All of them pretty much have the bass prowess you're looking for (although the SH does have the sub osc, it's really not that helpful in good bass), but the CS-10 is going to have the ability to do sounds the others won't because of, among other things, the multimode filter. All are great synths... but the CS is going to probably be cheapest, and featuring the most functionality.

I've never heard any of them in person (the closest equivalent being John Madeski's CS-01). My instinct tells me that I'd like the CS-10 But, don't ask me to go in to why, since I'm not entirely sure.

I wouldn't take the MS-10, personally. For a modular synth, I think I'd prefer a slightly bigger model.

MS-10, for interfacing with other gear and I hear it has a nasty filter.

CS-10's nice, simple but capable. the CS's having low/band/high pass filters is awesome. plus you'd almost definitely be able to land a CS-10 for less than the other two.

this is an entire subjective thing. you really should try each of them or at least hear good quality sound files of each before making a decision. they each have a different sound to them. that said, i dont recall the yamaha specs but if its got a multimode filter that often gives you a lot more options. though personally id say i prefer the rolands sound :)

sorry for posting in the wrong place. i will learn.

also, what ive been told is that the sound i am looking for primarily is a "detuned dual oscillator sawtooth" and i also know i like sine wave type stuff...if there is one in this range that would excel at those 2 sounds.

unfortunately i dont have the ability to try any of these out before hand. i appreciate your guidance and knowledge.

None of the synths you have listed will be able to nail the detuned saw/square bass sounds you are likely referring to - you'll need two oscillators for this and the MS, CS or SH only sport one VCO each.

However if you make use of PWM you can get a similar effect, although it won't be exactly the same.
