What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

Post by ted1986 » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:59 am

I know the DX7 was very popular in the 80s and I have noticed the tubular bells preset was especially popular (obviously not as popular as the E.Piano and Rhodes). As I'm an 80s maniac, I like discovering tracks that include DX7, Roland JX-8P, D-50 and I quite like the nostalgic tubular bells sound. I know it features in these tracks:

Paul Hardcastle - The Wizard (1986), Don't Waste My Time (1986), Just For Money (1985)
Five Star - If I Say Yes (1986)
Loose Ends - Magic Touch (1985)
Some of Enya's stuff too (c1988)
Top Gun opening theme (1986)
Miki Howard - Crazy (1987)

If you can think of any other tracks with tubular bells in or other DX7 presets, give me a shout

ted :o)

The 80s comedy series: Moonlighting (not the theme tune, which is DX-7 but not TBells), but the score throughout the series (again IIRC)

Wow 'the wizard' - haha that was I think the 3rd single vinyl I ever bought (was still a young kid with not much money), I've still got it around with the pic of him on the back with his suspended synths.. that was another turning point in my obsession with Synths I think... must give it a listen for DX7 now as my memory is fading.... :)

Depeche Mode - 'The Landscape is changing' - around 3:20 onwards some basic use of the tubes :)
That sound is not DX-7, it's PPG Wave or Synclavier

haha I just edited above because I had a thought it may be PPG! (seriously) - however in my defence it sounds very close to the Tuberise patch on the DX7 II (layered), though of course that wasn't released then - this is all from memory (and It was before I owned a DX7 II myself :) ) I see now the more subtle single voice patch is a lot brighter and used in a different way.

Wow, a real trainspotter's thread...

Band Aid- Do they know it's Christmas, right at the beginning, giving punctuation. This song is a good example of very well arranged electronic music!

XTC- The Meeting Place ( in the choruses)

Here's the most cheesy:

I can't think of any other song that used it so much as that one.
Apparently Eric Carmen REALLY liked that sound!

"I Still Believe" by The Call (someone else played it on the Lost Boys Soundtrack if I recall correctly). Anyway, the chorus has what sounds like the tubular bells to me.

Ah tube bells...my favorite DX7 preset. Used on almost everything mid to late 80s. These are the only ones i could think of right now

Nick Nicely - "Elegant Daze"
Elisa Waut - "Green Grass"
N.O.I.A. - "Try and See"

In the beginning of "Howard Jones - What Is love". Im also quite sure that the bell in "Laura Branigan - Self Control" is the DX7 tubular bell. Let me know if Im wrong.
I also used to believe that the bell in Giorgio Moroder's 'Ivory Tower' (from The Neverending Story) was the DX7 tub bell, however according to some info Micke had on Moroders use of synths on that soundtrack, it could most likely have been the Synclavier.

Roland: /AX-Synth/D-50/SH-201/
Korg: /EMX-1/Microkorg/Monotron/MS-20 Mini

I thought I'd better throw in "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz (1986). It seems 1986 was the year the DX7 tubular bells were used the most.

The bells can also be heard in some of Jan Hammer's music for Miami Vice. I cannot point out any specific track though.
