I just remembered something else. Do any of you remember the animated TV series from 1984 called Voltron: Defender of the Universe? The general score from that series included some use of the DX bell sound.

Which is odd, because he seems to have been a fan. There's always 2 in the studio pics...Synthprophet wrote:ArghDividedbyzero wrote:It's on Ethnicolor by Jean Michel Jarre from his Zoolook LP too.Being a Jarre-fan I should have remembered that. Actually I think the bell sound on that track, was the only time he ever used the DX7.

Actually he has said from time to time that he didn't like it, due to the kliché saying about this synth... it was a b***h to program. I have never seen more than one DX-7, but he did have a red painted DX-100.madtheory wrote:Which is odd, because he seems to have been a fan. Yeah, there's lots of very moody and interesting synth work to be heard on this soundtrack.StepLogik wrote:Agreed! It really is a creepy sounding score but there is a lot of very moody and interesting synth work.Micke wrote:The DX-7 tubular bells, or variations thereof, can also be heard on Charles Bernstein's synth-score to NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984). I really like this score and highly recommend it to those of you who are into spooky instrumental electronic music.
Btw, I just learned from a brief converstaion with Charles what synths/equipment he used in the making of the score.
Any guesses about what he used besides the DX-7?

I just remembered another song which features the DX7 tubular bells sound - a 1986 classic "Secret Lovers" by Atlantic Starr (YES "1986" AGAIN):
Probably one of the most prominent uses of the DX7 tubular bells ever.

I thought they were called Midnight Star, but that was a different group. And, those bells sound excellent in that song.ted1986 wrote:I just remembered another song which features the DX7 tubular bells sound - a 1986 classic "Secret Lovers" by Atlantic Starr (YES "1986" AGAIN):

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?
Hiya,
Correct me if any of these aren't DX7, but I'm a big fan of that patch as well and these sound close:
Pink Floyd - Yet Another Movie
David Bowie - Magic Dance (synclavier, maybe?), New York's In Love
Sparks - a great many of the songs on "Pulling Rabbits Out Of A Hat"
Gary Numan - Miracles
I recently acquired a TG-33, and it has a patch that comes very close. Close enough for my needs, anyway! You can hear the presets here, by the way:
http://www.synthmania.com/tg33.htm
(second-to-last patch, 87_PC_Bells).
Cheers,
-Josh

Or both. There are a few similarities (not many, a few) between some of the bell sounds in the Jx-10/MKS-70 and the DX bell sound.iProg wrote:Yet Another Movie could be the Super JX....

That could be a PPG Wave but I'm not sure. The Manitou wrote:Hiya,

There ain't no DX-7 in that song, the bells, harp and metal sounds are from the PPG Wave and Synclavier II respectively.DX wrote:Depeche Mode "People are People".
EDIT: The tubular bells sounds on It Doesn't Matter could be the DX-7 though.

I just discovered another nugget. Have any of you heard Barbara Dickson's Sting cover, "We Work the Black Seam?"
If you can find it on YouTube, go to 2:13.
