Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
Sorry if this sounds bad, its cool, but do the vids get any more interesting after the first few minutes? I was expecting more workshop type things and explaining how stuff works. Maybe I just need to sit still for a while and get past all the droning?
Might be worth a look back again later, so keep at it.

Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
It's more of a 10-minute jam followed by introductions... basically they just say what synths they're using (which I already knew just from looking at them), not much beyond that. Not exactly a "workshop" but a cool video nonetheless.
It's funny how they said "Korg Mono Poly" instead of pronouncing it like the board game (Monopoly).
Gives you some idea of how the synths sound. I liked that Vangelis-like sound he got out of the Mono/Poly.

I pronounce it Mono Poly becasue it's called Mono/Poly, not Monopoly (which I'm always annoyed when I hear it pronouced like the game).Synthaholic wrote:

Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
But, I'm betting when Korg came up with the name, they probably thought "Mono/Poly... monopoly!" I tend to pronounce things in the most efficient way.Z wrote:I pronounce it Mono Poly becasue it's called Mono/Poly, not Monopoly (which I'm always annoyed when I hear it pronouced like the game).Synthaholic wrote:

When I was watching the video, I didn't even know there was a Mono/Poly there 'till he started playing on it. It was pretty well hidden (though some of the overhead shots showed it...and then I'm going, where is it in the rig??)

Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
I always thought the Mono/Poly was pronounced like the board game but have heard it pronounced both ways. As far as the video is concerned....

Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
I feel dirty for not only getting the first Final Fantasy VII reference, but for actually programming the arpeggiator to play that very same sequence a short while after I got it.
Oh and for the record I also refer to it as the "Mono", "Poly".

Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
1: when shooting video, shoot a green screen not blue. There's a long detailed explanation, but let's just say there's more color data in green than blue on video.
2: don't wear blue in front of a blue screen, don't wear green in front of a green screen.
I think by "workshop" they were thinking more sound design stuff, not "fixing your broke synth" stuff.

You should try not to get annoyed.Z wrote:I pronounce it Mono Poly becasue it's called Mono/Poly, not Monopoly (which I'm always annoyed when I hear it pronouced like the game).Synthaholic wrote:

I used to pronounce it anti-game myself, until I heard Korg's own audio demo tape in which Korg pronounces it like the game.
From that point on, I pronounced it like the game.
It has a dual meaning, you see... based on the quote CZ posted.

I think I just lost the game. Like eighty times...
Re: Synth Workshop - New TV Series
There's no more colour information in a green screen than a blue screen. Digital video works in YUV colour space, blue - yellow being the U axis, red - cyan being the V axis.Ashe37 wrote:1: when shooting video, shoot a green screen not blue. There's a long detailed explanation, but let's just say there's more color data in green than blue on video.
The advantage green does have over blue is a greater range of luminance levels, so if you want to derive cast shadows from the 'talent' in front of a chroma key screen, green gives you more shadow detail. If all you're doing is filling a background with video (like in the workshop) either will work fine.
Blue was originally chosen in the days of primitive keyers as it was the primary colour furthest from the human face, additionally blue is the smallest contributor to luminance so you can use the difference between blue and luma to help separate the 'talent' from the blue screen.
