f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
Anyone here a f**k buttons fan by chance?
I'm trying to figure out what sampler or sampling software they might have used for the vocal loop sample on their last single, "surf solar." I'd like to know exactly what it is they're doing too...if thats possible to figure out?
any ideas? it is very interesting, and sounds quite amazing live...with all the machines they have in and out of suitcases (yes, they were set up partially inside a suitcase the time I saw them)...I couldn't telll what they hit to trigger it.
for some reason the youtube video won't post, so heres the link to the music video.

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
The main thing is it's being rhythmically gated.
Don't know what they're using, could be pretty much anything in software, or a sampler and MIDI sequencer, or if it's boxes like you say could be done with a BOSS SL-20, Adrenalinn or I think one of those Alesis ModFX boxes.
My guess is BOSS SL-20.

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
all it is is changing the volume rhythmically.
in the old days of MIDI it would be done with sequenced MIDI volume messages while playing a sample or something on a synth, or in the really old days by using an analogue sequencer to control a VCA. in software you could use a modulation clip. now there a re effects pedals like the ones i mentioned that will do something similar.
make sense?

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
definitely. i'm watching a demo for the boss sl-20 right now...i do believe i could achieve what i'm looking for with that pedal...thank you for suggesting it! i believe i passed it up before because it looked like a clipper/gapper type pedal...but running a sample through it could be exactly what i'm looking for.
thanks a lot masstronaut, you have been oh-so helpful!

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
heh sure thing! they're amazing. i know many people have written them off as being too pop for noise music, but f**k that. putting limitations on a particular style is ridiculous. they sound great, and theres nothing wrong if their noise has a beat or melodies...thats why it sounds so damn good!Old Iron Giant wrote:I AM NOW!!!rharris07 wrote:Anyone here a f**k buttons fan by chance?
fo-real.. thank-you for showing me this.
and they're great live too if you can catch a show.
i highly suggest checking out both their albums. If you can look around on youtube, find someone thats posted the song "the lisbon maru" - it is pretty f**k great.

Something I used to do back in the day was program a beat on a Roland drum machine and send the trigger out to an Alesis MicroGate and run a turntable into the MicroGate for some "auto-transforming".
I'm uploading a video to Vimeo that I made a couple of weeks ago with a Boss SL-20 I picked up on CL a couple months ago.

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
Any of the sampling Electribe series can do this in the box, and any of the other electribes can do this via the audio in. The Boss Sl is fun, but a lot of other Boss gear has the same slicer built in for cheaper, the EG303, VF-1, etc.
A Mini KP would work fine as well, as would umpteen million different freeware plugins.

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
I've gotten similar results using my MicroKorg.
vocoder w/ arpeggio MIDI'd to a Groovebox.
I guess if i wanted to save a segment as FX's, I could loop it back to a sampler.. "shrugs"

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
I guess drum machine + gate is the definition of rhythmic gating.
With the Electribes it's easy to do on the audio in but a bit harder with on board samples as you'd probably have to manually enter motion sequence data for the level control, right?
Two more devices you could do this with - Evolver and Nord Modular.

Re: f**k Buttons Vocal Sample
Well on the ESX, you can set the samples Amplitude/Pan/Cutoff Frequency/Pitch to be controlled by a clocked sample and hold LFO. Couple that with a motion sequence and you have some pretty out there gating sounds.

My new sampler is a Yak Bak. So I guess that isn't any help whatsoever.
