There is nothing less relevant in regard to a drum machine than whether it is analog or not.

It did? Why?kuroichi wrote:looking at your equipment list and reading this just confused me.....roland4387 wrote:Kick, snare, and toms are analog. All the rest are 8 bit samples.

I thought you would've known that the claps, and rim were analog... youve got all the 'classics', plus roland in your name....roland4387 wrote:It did? The DAC circuit in the 909 for the HH is really a marvel of Roland's "how cheap can we do this?" engineering. There is a good analysis of it here ( http://hardware.freepage.de/cgi-bin/fee ... hatand.htm ) for those not familiar with the circuit.

There are a lot out there who own Roland gear, but don't necessarily know much about the inner workings of them.kuroichi wrote:I thought you would've known that the claps, and rim were analog... youve got all the 'classics', plus roland in your name....roland4387 wrote:Kick, snare, and toms are analog. If you really wanted to be pointlessly geeky about this question, you could point out that the 909's cymbals are a combo of sample-based and analogue synthesis: 909 Cymbals breakdown
But ultimately, who cares as long as it sounds good? (unless you're planning to mutilate your drum machine with a soldering iron and a bunch of pots...)

Isn't the entire purpose of this forum to be "pointlessly geeky"?

I'm definitely one of them. I look at it this way, I've had three cars in my life and have probably driven 500,000 miles, but I couldn't tell you where the spark plugs are if my life depended on it.Syn303 wrote:There are a lot out there who own Roland gear, but don't necessarily know much about the inner workings of them.kuroichi wrote:I thought you would've known that the claps, and rim were analog... youve got all the 'classics', plus roland in your name....roland4387 wrote:Kick, snare, and toms are analog. Kuroichi, I updated my gear list for ya, got rid of the 909 a long time ago for the 999.
