Yamaha DX11 vs. Casio CZ-3000

Postby Gogledd » Wed Jun 09, 2010 10:57 am

Yamaha DX11 and Casio CZ-3000 - Cheap and cheerful '80s digital, anyone?

Both these little wonders are for sale near me at very similar prices. They seem quite comparable on the surface, though I only have the budget for one. What I'm looking for is something which can produce a decent enough sound on its own, but also serve as a good MIDI controller for my JV-1080. Which should I pick?
Analogue: Korg MS10, Yamaha CS5, Novation Super Bass Station, Casio HZ600, Oberheim Matrix 1000, RMIF Elsita

Digital: Yamaha SY35, Roland JV1080, Yamaha TX81Z, Roland TR626

Other: MSSIAH, Cheetah SpecDrum, Ekdahl Moisturizer, Casio VL1, Stylophone

I like the dx11, pretty nice 4 op fm synth. you can use other waveforms (not just sine). and it's 8 part multitimbral, which is handy if you want to play live with some sequencers.
it also looks pretty cool in a sleak late 80's way.

i've never tried the cz series but it seems that people like them, they look a bit easier to program.
this one also looks pretty cool in a chunky cumbersome mid-late 80's way...

i really like dx synths for basses, pianos, belltones and strange percussion. not sure what the cz excells at.
it's a toss-up really i think. if you already have an fm synth (i'm guessing you don't) then go for the cz. either way you'll get some nice synth action.

I would go with the with the CZ3000.Programing on the cz is analog like vs the fm programing on the dx-11.You could grab a TX81z(same as the dx 11 but even cooler) for very cheap 50 to a 100 and have both synth and control the tx with you cz! With both you have a nice range of crystal sounds!

The CZ3000 isn't velocity senstive, the DX11 is and has aftertouch too. Velocity is a must with a JV I'd say.
