Recommend a cheap as dirt module /rackmount synth

Post by blavatsky » Thu Oct 28, 2010 9:49 pm

Looking to buy a cheap and simple module - probably would be FM or rompler in my price range. Not looking to spend over $125. I don't expect fantastic sounds or anything knobby; something I can plug in and grab a few decent background type tracks from, or something that could be relevant with some effects. Cheap but useable.
Nothing super crappy like roland MT-32, also not looking for ancient samplers.

ex: nanopiano, micropiano, yamaha TX series, old roland JV stuff, ???

The TX81z is a great synth that you can easily get for about half of your budget.

Ensoniq SQ-R
Roland D-110, U-110, U-220, SC-55
Korg M3R, X5R, X5DR
E-mu racks...there's about a dozen Proteus variants differing mainly in the sample ROMs
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

JV-1080s are getting pretty cheap. Looks like a few have gone around $130 lately. Proteus 2000 modules are good choice too. Though if you think you might want to expand later, the JV ROM's seem to be a bit more plentiful and a tad cheaper.

Thanks guys - the jv1080 and korg racks (05r , x5r etc) are looking pretty good . I'd probably like the emu stuff to , i miss some of the mp-7 sounds and filters.

Can't recommend this enough. I've always owned one from the very get go in some shape or form. The pc editor is free, will run on anything, and allows you to actually edit the 2op fm engine. You basically get something akin to the yamaha pss series fm synths, but with midi, patch saving, etc.
We'll always be remembered, we'll always be dismembered.

not really. This isn't the classified section, and since you bothered mention a price, I thought I'd mention that they could be had for cheaper.

Well then perhaps you should also mention that there currently isn't one for sale on eBay, so if the OP was intending on purchasing any time soon - that they would not be able to find one cheaper right now on eBay.

Awww man swordfight in the middle of a thread.

Anyway, yeah I've seen some of the various Proteus modules for sale in/near the OP's range, and/or the JV-1010...
