I haven't seen a complete 816 for sale for a few years, but I do remember them being cheaper. I wasn't sure if they were going up or what. Yes, I've heard the TX816's have a "fuller" sound, but I cannot confirm that.
If I wanted to use FM live, I'd probably go with a full 816. The problem with recording one is that you have to lower the input gain so much that you defeat most of the qualities of the synth. It's a bit like recording a symphony where you do everything you can to prevent clipping and breakup. You end up setting your input signal so low that you loose most of the dynamics.
