Hey, I used to have a PSR-41 actually. It sounded very good.

Why go through all that trouble? Get FM8 and a knobby controller and go to town.

For cheap and easy, nothing beats the Yamaha portasounds - there were at least 4 (PSS-390/470/570 and PSR-41) that had low-resolution parameter sliders that still allowed a pretty wide control over the sound (or presets). The PSR41 actually had midi too. They are all 2 or 4-op, but can still sound really rude!
Those are actually pretty cool. I used to have a PSS-570 that I found for $20 in a pawn shop in 2005. It was my first synth and I thought it was totally awesome. Even after owning lots of other gear, I'd have to say if you can get one for less than $60 they're worth owning.

There's also MIDIbox FM: http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_fm.html if you're cool with DIY.
