Assistance Creating a particular Pad sound

Post by BenR » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:03 pm

Hello,

I am a casual user with a Kawai K3. I am trying to create a sort of breathing brass sound that was often used on records in the mid 80's. Examples of the sound include 14 seconds into this song:

and it looks like the Roland MKS-70 has the patch as well:

A sound that sort of breathes or puffs as you press harder down on the keys and then dies away fairly quickly. I am not very good with programming and any general guidelines for creating this sort of sound would be greatly appreciated.

You might find this article useful: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun01/a ... s.pt26.asp . I've followed these hints to make a pretty good brass sound on several analogs. You should probably be able to get good results with the K3 as there must be a brassy sounding wave. Although I owned two K3s at one time, I don't remember if there was a brass wave.

Wave #8 is the Brass.

That sound in the song sounds like an electric piano though? Soft brass sounds is usually two detuned sawtooth and filter swept by a filter envelope. Very basic synth sound.

Is the K3 an additive synth like the K5000? If so, then you'd have to do it in a different way i guess..

Yes, the sound in the song sounds like an electric piano to me, too. The K3/K3M are digital wave oscillator synths (not additive except maybe the user wave) and waveform #6 is their electric piano waveform. Try building a patch around that waveform.

Thanks for the input. I will give those particular waveforms a try.
