Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
Sorry gonna disagree with Dave on that... if the resolution for the CCs was higher than 7-bit then the instrument wouldn't *need* to smooth it.

Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
It was not only a brave but also briliant choice on Dave's part to go in this direction. like he explains in his video he was after a new sound that simply could not be achived with analog dco's.
Only better quaility direct demos will tell more of the story and let us see how the digital side is implemented. Are the Ocs's analog modeled or are they sampled? What is the level of aliasing, is there any? I would like to hear some more traditional sounds and raw wave stuff and of course the new sonic terriotry it can cover and explore.
To me Dave's instruments have been two things, evolutionary and revolutionary. The P12 from what i can see so far follows that tradition. it seems to be the beast to beat.

I doubt the oscillators are samples. I imagine the classic waveforms at the least are modeled. I imagine there are samples of the VS...

Decent vid; anything with a "decimate" knob gets my approval. I was waiting to see Mr.Doty fiddling around with the Moog modular in the background, but maybe him and Dave Smith would be too much for single video, too much.Bitexion wrote:In this NAMM video Dave Smith himself talks us through the synth and some demos. P.S. "If you're hearing stepping it's not a good design" - don't get too cocky Dave

He described them as "low-aliasing oscillators" so take that however you will. I doubt they will alias unless you want them to, the guy knows what he's doing just a little bit. What is the level of aliasing, is there any?

The "analog waveforms" have to be modelled, or you can't do things like hard sync and PWM on them.

An ESQ has sync, and yet is sample based...Bitexion wrote:The "analog waveforms" have to be modelled, or you can't do things like hard sync and PWM on them.

Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
One thing i'm a little confused by is Carson Day in two seperate video's i have watched makes it a point to say that the sub osc is for osc 1 (30 secs in the video linked here), yet Dave says its 5 osc (including sub osc) per voice for a stacked unison of 60 osc's.
Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Not sure what they mean by 5x12=60 in unison either. Unless he counts the sub oscillator as 1.

Think that's what he (Smith) said in the sonic state video I saw

Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
It's a massive sound. My Andromeda has 2 vco pr voice and 16 voices. That's 32 oscillators in unison mode, it's pretty scary. Specially when you start spreading them out.

Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
I really like what I'm hearing in the demos. This is one of the first Dave Smith synths to really grab my attention. For many reasons I cannot get any new expensive monster poly's. If something else in my setup were to bite the dust this would be a strong contender.

Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
Yeah, but this one will be expensive too..he mentioned 3000 dollars at the end.
Way cheaper than the big polys were back in the 80s though..an Oberheim OB-8 was like $7000

Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
I find this synth so much more exciting than the other (same old) new synths at NAMM.
Re: DSI announces Prophet 12!
I must say I dont really like the look of it (apart from the backlit 12) but it sounds amazing from the demos Ive heard so far.
