I think you convinced me that maybe he's asking too much...

I would trade my TR-707 for a TOM I guess... But I'm feeling like I should consider the DDD-1 because of the price point (Under $200).

I would love to trade my TR-707 plus cash for a Drumtraks maybe... but they seem to be scarce right now.

I dunno... I just know I'm not loving the TR-707. It's too... polite.

Yeah man, just telling you from my experience owning all of em. It's a great box, but only worth that if it's perfect & you're going to really use the s**t out of it. Definitely better than 707 IMO, but I DO like the TR style sequencers. If you get a DT make sure you keep it well ventilated, it gets HOT.

Why not just get a second hand mpc1k and samples of all of them? Seems like you can't decide between different machines and there's an easy way to have them all.

Everyone wants a Roland TR series. Get a DDD-1 instead! I'm loving mine with a RAM card, Sampler, original ROM cards and expansion ZIF cards available from a guy in the U.K. Worth the money! I'm also one of those few who's "livin' in the 80's."

In the opposite end of the spectrum. . . I wasn't into the interface or the sounds of the DDD-1. I gave it to some kid I met in a grocery store and never missed it.

Also, I the TR-707 is a lot less polite with some effects. Old Armando and Dance Mania records are attest to that.

DDD1 and R100 are both amazing. I think the DDD1 is crisper and packs more punch on the attack, while the R100 is more crunchy and dark. RX5 is another great workhorse, although I feel it lacks a certain midrange slug that the Korg & Kawai pack. Two words about the RX5 though: Pitch. Envelopes. And it gets really nasty with little effort. I mean that in a good way. It can quickly sound like more of a crazy digital synthesizer or early sampler than drum machine.

If you get an R100, make sure you get one with the aftermarket solution that lets you install all of the soundcards internally and switch between them on the fly. You WILL want that, and you won't be able to find just that kit anymore. Gotta find an R100 that had it installed back in the day...

The only thing I find appealing about the 707 is the fact that it makes me think of Skinny Puppy. But it was never their signature drummachine sound like the R100 was the signature Wax Trax! drum machine... Their rhythm tracks were a stew of 606, 707, 808, 909 and who knows what else.

Own 'em both, and while I'm a 707 (and 727) fan, I'd say DDD-1 'cause it's crazy underrated. However, to be fair, the DDD-1 really only shines when you've got a sampling board and a crapload of cards to swap and the golden days of finding cheapish cards (or even finding them at all) dried up a few years ago .. I'm lucky to have stockpiled when I did. Worst case, the MPC1000 + JJOS + samples might be the most PRACTICAL approach, to be honest. Godspeed.

I've only used/own the DDD-1, and what makes it really cool is the way you can glitch card-based samples by jiggling the cards around so it's not sitting clean on its contacts. Makes some really cool ring-mod/bitcrushed sounds when you do this, so it's not necessarily something you can emulate easily. It's also got velocity so that's something.
