Small sampler. MPX8?

Postby gwarmonger » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:12 pm

I recently bought an Elektron Monomachine. It is sweet. I want a small sampler to sequence with it to round out the sound. I am on a REALLY tight budget. I mean...I CAN go as high as like $300 but cheaper is much better. I don't need a sequencer. Effects or editing capabilities would be nice but also not necessary. I want something cheap, small, that can hold samples (preferably stereo, 44100, 16-bit) and a reasonable amount of length per sample, and isn't completely ancient (which wouldn''t work with small anyways) because I don't want to deal with scsi drives or floppies or anything, smcards would be great.

This new Akai MPX8 thing seems like it might do the trick. It's specs are a little weak but the price is right and it does what I want. Eventually I will get something more substantial but I think it could be fine for now.

Anyone used an MPX8? Any other ideas? Everyone seems to rave about the Korg ESX but A. little more than I want to spend B. Apparently hard to come by.

Two that I can vouch for:

Zoom ST-224
Boss/Roland SP-505
Finally pared down to 3 machines and no GAS for months!
Tempest | Spectralis | MV-8800

I have a 64 patch Tempest soundset for 10 bucks, Here (16 bass drums, 48 synth patches)

|Don't forget that the MPX8 does not sample itself. It's strictly a playback unit, so you'll have to download samples from someplace online, or roll your own with something like Audacity or a DAW.

The best budget sampler I've ever used is the Roland SP-505. You can sample, edit, effect, sequence. The big plus is that it's not a beasty table top unit; only about the size of a text book. The only downside is finding a 128mb smartmedia card, but if you're savvy enough you can generally find one for a few bucks. I regularly hunt thrift stores and check out old digital cameras, occasionally you can find one for a couple bucks with a memory card inside. The machine itself generally runs you about $150-$200 used.

There are a few other units out there that I"ve played with that are good, but take up WAY too much space. The ASR-X is a classic, but has limited sample capacity. The Roland SP-808EX is a hefty unit, but again pretty big and uses a noisy Zip250 drive.
