Axel F on my friend's Juno 106. First cover tune I picked out on piano when I was 8 was "Evil Woman" by ELO. Not the whole song just the main bit. I was very proud of myself, needless to say.

"Magic Fly" by Space, played on a Korg Poly-800. Not the whole thing, of course, but just the melody.

And this wasn't in 1986, either. It was 2013.

My first "proper" synth was an Alesis Ion, and I'm not positive, but it was quite possibly a sloppy version of the dotcom modular solo from Dream Theater's "Octavarium," because it came out right around the time I bought the Ion. It was also my first programmed sound, I believe.

Yeah darn that Rudess, buying a huge dotcom modular, setting it to a simple lead sound and leaving the settings for 2 years ^^

Yeah, and Richard Lainhart did a similar thing with his Buchla, though the routing matrix on it sort of allowed for presets.

Never ever did that through a whole song, and never wanted that (someone else's arrangement, meh - am I that stupid? why?). Replaying/citing short licks/riffs was totally acceptable, but replaying someone else's melody/song as a whole would be a total loss. You needed to improvise, at the very least.
So the first probably were the really basic riffs from Bobby O's Desire and Passion on a Faemi-mini using different base chords, and then the ones from Rock Me Amadeus on a Maestro.

I don't like the drums, but the drums like me!

I learned "Give In To Me" by Michael Jackson when I was 14, but I played it on my uncle's Technics keyboard. I was really impressed by the electric guitar sound on it and completely overlooked that he had a goddamn CS-80 in the other room at the time, hah. Don't really remember what was the first one I learned to play on the Kawai keyboard I had myself (the keyboard sounded a lot like the Adlib soundcard for PCs), maybe it was "Yesterday" by The Beatles. I was playing with one hand only up to the age of 15, I think. I was allowed to play a very good piano in high school later on and improved a lot as a result of it.

I felt the same way when I first starting playing as a teenager. I would throw on old 70's punk records that had no keyboard or synth sounds and learned my way around the keys by coming up with new things to add on top of the music. It was sort of like imagining I was a "new member" in the band, rather than trying to mimic someone else.

Oh L'Amour by Erasure on a Yamaha V50 with the 8-track sequencer and unquantized drums before I knew that they could be more in time... Ah, youth.

What´s wrong with that? Emerson has become a great hero that way. Everybody thinks Emerson is God -- and God never changes presets.

Kraftwerk: Antenna on a borrowed Korg MS-10 in 1987.
