Identify this Tears For Fears Drum Sample

Post by JHatzia » Sun Nov 02, 2014 8:24 am

I keep on hearing this sample in modern songs that I originally recognize from this Tears For Fears track, "Listen." I'm not sure whether it's a vibraphone or wood block type sound, but it comes in at 2:53

Well, that track is driven by Fairlight CMI II, so I would take a listen to the percussion discs. Any examples of the other tracks where you've heard it?

Here is another track that features these vibraphone like samples. It can be heard near the beginning and at 1:18. They are much more subtle in this track

I've been downloading loads of Fairlight perc and drum sample packs but still with no luck. Anyone out there have a clue?

Yeah, that's a kalimba sample played a lot lower that it is supposed to be.

I think it's the Marimba sample from the Mallets disc or perhaps the BassMar(imba) sample from the same disc but played higher.

I happened to find a load of Fairlight samples, and some Marimba samples that sound a little like it when pitched up and reverb applied but still not quite there. This sample pack has that exact "BassMar" sample in it too. Awesome sample packs regardless. http://sonicbloom.net/en/?s=fairlight&submit=Search

It could also be an FM patch from the DX (1 or 7, I can't remember). They had one MIDI'ed up to a Prophet T8. The DX7's 'Block' sound sounds very much like this too. I will try and compare the two sounds romorrow.

Funny, I noticed it in this recently.

Much more prominent in 'Mad World' btw.

How did I not realize this was right in the beginning of Mad World? Thanx! So it can't be a DX7 as The Hurting was released in 83 I believe. Any other guesses?

Producer Chris Hughes is credited with playing tuned percussion on The Hurting so I've the feeling it's a real
marimba or similar mallet percussion instrument on Mad world. It could be a Fairlight sample but I'm not
sure that Chris already had one by the time of that recording (the single was released in sep 1982).

I haven't tested this but it appears the answer could be a slowed down CR-78. Curt Smith told me.

Great find Mastronaut. I'm listening to demos right now but not really hearing it. I think I may have samples of this machine at home. I'll check it out later tonight.

If it is the CR-78 I'd say it's most likely the clave with a quick delay on it for that flam effect. I'm getting something close(ish) with a quick check - CR-78 clave sample pitched -12 semitones and around a 27ms delay.
