Micke - a while back (I think it was you) there was posted a link to a Scandinavian TV on the history of "Every Breathe You Take". That link seems to be dead. Do you know of another link for it??Micke wrote:The Neverending story (1984) - Arthur Barrow, Giorgio Moroder and Gary Chang were all big users of the Jupiter-8.

Love the title track to that album and was very happy to have -finally- worked out how they performed that wonderful tug boat signature sound with a skilfully performed pitch bend on the DX7 followed by the those infamous two notes on the JP-8 (at least I think it was that way round!)
I've rediscovered this wonderful band after so many years and a great live act too.
Speaking of Jupiters... I recently had a poorly JP-4 in the workshop and really liked the way it sounds - it has a very warm cosseted sound about it (warmer and less fizzy than JP-6) with a great arpeggiator..

I found this quote from Ian Curnow:HideawayStudio wrote:gcoudert wrote:Talk Talk - It's my life (album)I was going to make the same suggestion... I love that album!

.
"Not entirely sure what the main synth line on It's My Life is, but the main organ / pad sound on it was probably Tim, on an Oberheim OBMx, but most the others were me on a Roland Jupiter 8, except one we called Tugboat (the 2 note deep blown sound on the verses, that was Tim again on OBMx)
The Elephant was using one oscillator that rose and dropped in pitch, while being cross modulated by another oscillator which makes the pitches of oscillator one sound as harmonic distortion on the sound of oscillator 2. That's basically it, anyway.
Again, I'm not really sure what you refer to as the "lead synth" on It's You. The organ / pad synth from the bridge is a similar OBMx combination to It's My Life I think, from TIm. The 5ths lead synth after the first chorus and under verse 2 is as derivative of one of the JP8 sounds I used to use distorted for the guitar parts, a kind of bell sound but without the distortion. I think it features on The Last Time too, or another derivative of it. The solo was done on a similar sound to the main chorus line in Such A Shame, more cross modulating oscillators but without the pitch changing so drastically, just used to give a distortion to a more controlled pitched sound. Underneath that is another of the bell like sounds I used for guitar parts, this time distorted through a guitar amp and then sent to a PA rig and recorded in the room like that."
"OBMx" must be a typo, it should be OB-Xa I think. Anyway, I'm not totally sure there's any DX-7 on the actual studio recording, though they definitely had one
for the subsequent tour. There's an interview with Talk Talk in the July '84 issue of Electronics & soundmaker where Ian Curnow mentions that the synths used on the album included an OB-X (Micke: again, it probably should be OB-Xa but I might be wrong), Jupiter 8 (main synth) and some PPG wave....
I just watched a live performance of "It's My Life" from 1984 and from what I can tell the 2-note deep blown sound
heard during the verses (ie the 'tugboat' sound) was played on the Jup-8 while the bendy flute lines are from the DX-7. This
does not seem to have been the case on the studio recording though (see Curnow's quote above).

It's a rare live performance from German TV, was the first time they used the Jupiter 8 I believe.synthroom wrote:What the heck was that???!!!Stab Frenzy wrote:

Re: Favorite use of the Jupiter 8
Many bands did that to prevent free advertising for synth brands in their videos. JM Jarre still does it live too. Even the bright red Nords have no logos on them. If you get no sponsorship from Roland, why should you plaster their logos everywhere in your music videos, afterall?
