What synth have you bought more than one of?

Post by Walter Ego » Wed Jan 06, 2016 7:46 pm

What synth/synths or other electronic instruments have you bought more than one of, and for what reason?

I have one working and one non-working microkorg. I want four of them. Because I think it looks cool.

I also have two CZ-101's. And I want four. Why? Because I like them and I want to stack four of them, just like the microkorgs.

And I have two Casio VL-1's. One for me and one for the wifey. Why? Because it's cute.

I've bought and sold two ESQ-1's and finally have a third that I plan to keep.

I think that covers it. What's yours?

I did have 2 PPG Wave 2.2s, but recently sold one to Calvin Harris.

I still have 2 APR Avatars, 2 Roland Fantom X6 and 2 SCI ProOne

I currently have 2 SCI Prophet VS racks, but one is at the tech and will sell one of them.

Since I flip gear on the side, it's not uncommon for me to have 2 of something at any given time. The most I've ever had of one instrument is 4 Juno 106, and Garranimal serviced 3 of them at once.

I've bought and sold at least 4 of my own Juno-106 synths. Sometimes I believe it's redundant and I have other gear that can do the same sounds. But I miss the fun of punchy envelopes, filter, bender section and the chorus. I'm on my fifth one which is hopefully the keeper.

I've had 3 PolySix synths and two JP-6.
I traded in a Japanese Xpander for a USA Matrix-12, for more voices.
Of synths I no longer have: two JP-8000, two MS-2000, three MC-303, two MC-505, two JV-1080 (plus one XP-50) all sold. I don't go into these scenarios to flip things, but guilty for not using them so I sell.

I have two TX81Z modules for 16-voice polyphony. Someone recently commented I should try stacking their sounds and de-tuning one of them.

Never more than one of a kind at the same time, but I have sold synths only to buy another one later :banghead:
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Egads! You've felt the pain of the silly price increases of the 106 so. It is a very nice synth, but at this stage they're just not worth it IMO. I would've thought the JP6 was capable of the same stuff, without the chorus?

I had 2 Yamaha CS-5s, a CS01 and a CS-10 at one point. I wish I could find the photo of all of them stacked up. I did mult them all to a Kenton Pro Solo (with Kenton mod fitted to CS01), but for some reason 2 oscillators sounded a lot better than 4.

I only ended up with them because they were all ridiculously cheap to buy. Bought my first CS-5 for £47 (!) in 1992, also my first ever synth. The CS10 came later, it was a gift from a very kind classmate. I bought the other CS-5 from my piano tuner, who almost didn't sell it to me because he couldn't understand why I'd want another one- that was £20, the same price he paid for it! The CS01 was €50, I used it a lot live for lead sounds with a band I was in. Sold them all gradually. I held on to the CS-5+10 combo because it was really nice. Eventually they were worth enough to fund a very nice holiday, plus be replaced by a Novation KS rack in 2010 :)

I usually never have two of anything, but I did have a Kawai K1m and K1r at the same time - I bought the rack version to replace the module and sold the module.

I have had 2 Roland S-760s at once. Sold one

I had 4 Roland S-550s at the same time (along with a S-50 keyboard). I bought the first one, and then found a broken one for cheap. It's still broken... Then I found a broken one with the SCSI card. It's still broken too...
And then I found a working one with SCSI - it came with a Roland CD-5 SCSI CD-ROM and a lot of floppies. I sold the first one - the working one without SCSI. Still have the two broken ones. I also picked up a second CD-5 as the rubber bits in the first CD-5 had worn out. The second one has the same issues and currently has the CD caddie (remember those!) stuck in the mechanism.

And last month, I bought a second Kurzweil K2000 - the first one is a K2000S V3 with a dead floppy but the rest works. The second is a K2000 VP - fully functional with 64 MB RAM. I'll try to get the floppy working on the first one and sell it.

I bought four Roland S760's several years ago. I had been using an S770 on stage and it was kind of big. The 760 is smaller with twice the memory and loads Akai samples. Don't know why I got four but they were fairly inexpensive and one has a bad display which I paid $75 for. So I have the manuals and mice for all these. eBay asking price for a mouse alone these days is pretty near what I paid for an S760 with mouse.

I've never had two of the same thing at the same time, but money/space constraints tend to yield a lot of repeats. With the exception to the Blofeld and MS-2000, anything I've had more than twice I've kept:

Waldorf Blofeld (x4)
Elektron Monomachine (x3 - currently own)
Elektron Octatrack (x3 - currently own)
Korg MS-2000 (x3)
Native Instruments Maschine Mk2 (x3 - currently own)
Teenage Engineering OP-1 (x3 - currently own)
Arp Odyssey (x2)
Arturia Microbrute (x2)
Dave Smith Instruments Evolver Desktop (x2)
Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 (x2)
Elektron Analog Four (x2)
Elektron Analog Keys (x2)
Elektron Analog Rytm (x2)
Elektron Machinedrum (x2)
Farfisa Compact Deluxe (x2)
Korg Electribe 2 (x2)
Korg Electribe EA-1 (x2)
Korg Electribe EMX-1 (x2)
Korg Electribe ER-1 (x2)
Korg Electribe ESX-1 (x2)
Korg Monotribe (x2)
Korg Volca Beats (x2 - currently own)
MFB Synth Lite (x2)
Moog Prodigy (x2)
Quasimidi Sirius (x2)

Holy moly, that is an impressive list, natrixgli.
I've had a lot of electric pianos...Had 15 Wurlitzer 206's at one time, plus a 207 (I bought a high school's piano lab many years ago). Only ended up keeping one of them, and a friend who helped me flip them kept another...Kinda wish I'd done that whole deal differently but I digress.

I currently have two Rhodes MkI's, one of which is in pristine condition but never had much character. I keep it for spare parts mostly. One day I may overhaul it when I have the space.
I also have two Casio CZ-5000s.
I've had two Yamaha TX7s and several models of DX at the same time, but I currently only have a DX7 (E!) and DX100.
When I have the spare cash I definitely plan on buying a second Korg ARP Odyssey. What a great synth.

If you have the budget and the space, I think it's great to have duplicates of gear that you really cherish. It's also nice if you gig regularly like I do to have one to take with you and one to leave home in the studio. Or if you go on extensive tours, having the luxury of duplicate backup synths can be a lifesaver, as I'm sure many keyboardists will attest. It really is a luxury to have two (or more) of a lot of rare pieces, one I wish I could afford...maybe one day!

I've had two MPC1000s and an MPC2500, but never more than one at a time. I've had both the keyboard and desktop Evolver at the same time. I kind of regret selling my Octatrack so will probably buy another one when I come into some money. I have four Pittsburgh Synth Blocks, for polyphony.

Yamaha RS7000 x3. I only bought two, one bought new when they came out, second one second hand later, and one is a friends. Why? One to load while the other plays, 3rd as a backup, or bonus 16 tracks and or bonus effects.

I have two Roland JX-3P because I happened to get them when they were cheap, and I like them. I also have two of the new Oberheim SEM modules (with patch panels) because this is the only way to get close to a Two Voice for the time being. I also have two ARP Sequencers because I am used to working with these (and never bothered to find a more contemporary replacement).

I used to have two Korg PE-2000 Polyphonic Ensembles at a time, two PPG Wave Computer 360, two Roland RE-301 Chorus Echoes, three Roland Dimension D, seven or eight Compact Phasings, two Yamaha YC-30 organs... back-up units, for spares, or simply because I enjoyed working with them.

I've owned 2 x Roland D50 and 2 x Roland JD800.

I bought a JD-800 about 10 years ago and it was far too much synth for me at the time. It was wasted on me but I'd always promised myself one. Sold it a couple of years later.

A couple of years ago I bought a D50 to see what the fuss was about. Absolutely loved it but programming was a pain - even with the PG-1000. I was also disappointed to find out you couldn't filter the PCM sounds. If anything that made me appreciate how good the programming on the numerous soundbanks was.

So what I wanted was a digital synth that was easy to program and had proper filtering capabilities... time to give the JD800 another chance, so I bought another.

After using it for a while it made me realise how warm sounding the D50 was in comparison to the slightly clinical JD800, so I bought another D50 last year, and recently picked up a PG-1000 too. However my programming skills still aren't good enough and I don't have the luxury of time to spare on it, so I find myself cherry-picking sounds from the widely available sysex soundbanks. The PG-1000 is going up for sale.

They are both now keepers. The JD800 I absolutely love, it's incredible. I'll try and pick up a JD990 at some point.

I had a DX7 Mk 1 and a TX7 at the same time for years but I used them as separate sound sources most of the time.

Korg Es1, x2
Minikorg x2
Yamaha An1x x2
Pro1 x2
MEK x2

Basically, I should have kept all the s**t I bought in my first couple years of acquiring synths...haha.

I was also kind of surprised at the lack of filter on the PCM sounds. There wasn't really much documentation on that aspect of it. What you can do is use the sweepable EQ to get it somewhere close.

I downloaded the D50 librarian to edit, and have been enjoying it a lot more.
