Help choosing a first synth(mainly Cz101 or microkorg)

Post by alel » Mon Aug 15, 2016 6:13 pm

Hi. I'm a complete beginner to synths and I'm looking for a cheap under 200$ synth. I wanna create modern electorinc dance music and I like the idea of knobs but I want to be able have presets. I want polyphonic sound with preferably an analogue sound. I want something that will grow with me. Something that I can create my own sounds and not rely on presets

So I know there not analogue but pm is pretty close in sound and I've nailed it down to either Casio cz-101 or the korg microkorg. The main issue I have with the microkorg is that it seems like I'll have to do a lot of menu diving.

Any ideas, third possible choice?

I'm handy with a soldering iron so I don't mind fixing a broken synth if I can get it cheaper or if it's vintage.

Thx in advance

Based on your preferences, the Microkorg is probably the better choice. There is some menu diving, but it's not too bad, and it at least has some knobs - the CZ series only offers increment/decrement buttons for the parameters, which makes onboard editing incredibly tedious. Also, the Microkorg is probably a lot closer to the kind of sound you're looking for - the CZ series is neat in its own way, but its sound is much closer to the Yamaha FM synths than anything even virtual analog.

Definitely the MicroKorg. Sounds more analog, the arpeggiator will come in handy for the kind of music you want to do and it has knobs.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Yes, I would recommend the Korg R3 over the microKorg if it is in your budget.

personally, i prefer the sound of the cz101, but the programming is tedious.
another suggestion would be software and a controller like one of the novation remote series so you'd have knobs per parameter. or the microkorg hooked up to a computer for editing.

I'm gonna go with the r3. I've seen a lot of good deals on eBay and craigslist
