Re: KAWAI K5000R Cool Blue LCD!

Post by Mandala Music » Mon Mar 27, 2017 10:30 am

I bought an upgrade "Cool Blue LCD" for my Kawai K5000R. When I first tried to install the display, I was confused because I didn't see a way to access the circuit board so I could attach the ribbon cable from the display by going in through the top of the K5000R. It turns out that the bottom comes off the K5000R and that's how you get to the circuit board.

The second issue was that the new display is thicker than the old one. I replaced the original display with the new one and found out that the front panel buttons no longer worked because the new display lifted the front panel too high so the buttons no longer made contact with the sensors underneath them.

By reading some of the posts on this forum, I found out that you have to mount the display lower than the original display was mounted. I removed all four mounting posts using needlenose pliers (is there a special tool for this? It is a very tedious process using the pliers). There now is nothing behind where the display was - just bare metal so I covered the bare metal with black electrical tape to insulate the display from the metal.

Then you mount the new display flush against the metal using only the two topmost screw holes. Use screws that are a little longer than the original screws which are not long enough.

Don't put the screw in the middle hole when you put the front panel back on, you will mess up the display which is directly below it now that you moved the display lower. I covered the hole with red tape.

I share this post because I want to help someone by sharing my experience like people have already helped me by sharing their experience here about this issue. The photos below show the K5000R installation.

I am about to do this to my K5000W with a Buydisplay.com lcd. I have had good luck with their 16x2 character LCDs. On the K5000W, does it need to be mounted differently than is shown here for the K5000R?

I installed one of the K5000R displays I bought from MusikElektronic on Ebay. The display comes with the ribbon cable correctly configured to plug into the K50000R. I also bought one for my K5000S but I am busy with other projects currently and probably won't get around to installing it until next Winter. I have not seen any close up views of the K5000S display being screwed into place so I don't know if there are any adjustments needed to make it fit.

I installed one of those Naibantov/Gotek floppy disk to USB drives in my Triton rack without too much trouble. I was considering installing one of these in my K5000S but it wasn't obvious how you remove the drive when I had my K5000R rack open so I couldn't remove it from my K5000R. Maybe it will be different when I open the K5000S.

One caution when installing a Naibantov/Gotek USB drive is that it seems that you need to have a PC running XP to use the software to load files to the USB drive. If any one has used a Naibantov or Gotek USB drive with a later version of Windows, I would be happy to hear about it.

I didn't get around to explaining that you can use a mini wrench (one end open and the other end closed) to tighten nuts as small as 2mm like the ones you will need to tighten when you install the K5000R display. So much easier than using needlenose pliers. You can get a whole of set of Craftsman "Midget Wrenches" for about $15 at Ebay. I have found them indispensable for my other projects too.

I believe the EL drive xsistor on the power supply board is Q3.

Hi,

First of all, sorry for the resurrection of this thread... I know it's a bit old now.

The thing is that I have a Kawai K5000S and now have got a K5000R as well. I would like to upgrade the display, although the original LCD and EL are still working fine on both units.

I'm trying to read and process all the information contained in the thread but I've seen that many externally hosted pictures are not available anymore. Someone still has the original pictures and can upload them again?

Thank you very much.

EDIT: I've managed to recover the most relevant pictures of the original thread. I'm reposting them here as attachments so anyone can use them to follow the tutorial easily.

Hey all K5K junkies - and Mastro, if you're reading :)

I have an LCD that matches the one pictured that does *not* have a J2 jumper. The pinout is the same as the original K5K. It has a J1 jumper, but, again, no J2.

Has anyone used one of these successfully? It seems that as long as the pins 1, 19, 20 are not connected, the transistor is removed from near the transformer, and the A/K connections are hooked up to the floppy power supply it *should* work.

If anyone has used this board, please post.

Thanks in advance!!

Mastropiero, thank you for posting the images from the original thread. I was in the process of hunting them down. I bought one of these LCDs: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-240x64-G ... 2749.l2649 which is one of ones which supposedly work as mentioned somewhere in the thread (I picked white on back because I thought might look better and be easier on the eyes). Did you get yours to work?

I also figured that as long as I was rummaging around inside my K5KS, I might as well upgrade the memory, so I bought one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/kawai-ME-1-mem ... 2749.l2649, and will probably replace the main memory battery if I can find it. I did not see it in the service manual. Anyone know where it might be, and what type it is?

Thanks!

Hi,

well, it's my turn now!

I've soldered the pins and the 1Kohm resistor.

Where I get the +5V power from? Some say "from the floppy +5v" but I don't understand what they mean. Do I need to tap somewhere in the floppy drive itself, or it's something on the PSU?

Hi,

I finally god the +5V from the PSU. There are many pads you can get the +5V from (just follow the FDD +5V ping and you'll find a lot of right places to solder your +5V wire).

However, I'm facing the contrast issue other people have reported. At minimum contrast level (=0) the LCD is too bright and contrast level=5 turns the display into a flat white panel with no readable text.

Any ideas?
