Roland MS1 bios update problems
I've tried updating the bios (1.12) on my MS1 from the update (1.13) on the Roland US site, but it has caused an error in my MS1 after loading, saying "Checksum error!" and now doesn't work properly (it works, but Bank B samples are not accessible, only bank A). Has anyone else tried this and had the same problem?
Does anyone have the old 1.12 bios? I have found the 1.12 bios on the roland UK site but it is corrupt and won't play from my loading program, in order to upload it to the MS1.
Cheers, Graham

I just spoke to a tech at Roland support, and he emailed me (for free) the good 1.12 bios after getting it from Roland Japan. I loaded it and now all is good again
So for anyone who has read about updating the MS-1 bios to 1.13 via the bios on ANY of the Roland websites (RolandUS, RolandUK, Roland Japan), DO NOT USE them. If you do, they will crash and corrupt your machine. If you then try and reinstall the older 1.12 bios found on the RolandUK or Japan sites, they will also not work. But whatever happens, do NOT think your machine is stuffed - just get a Roland tech support guy to email it to you, and it will be good as new. I can email it to you also!
To upload the bios to your MS1, use the free "Roland SMF update application" loader on this page:

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
That's ok.... I give this freely, it was given to me freely. I myself have got things freely from places, never to be seen again on them. I just like seeing people solve their problems and the excitement they get when a dead machine suddenly springs to life again. It's funny, the MS-1 - there are so many better samplers that are out there, and of which I have myself (FZ-1, ESi2000) but I still can't bear to part with it.

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
Good People i wasnt posting cause i was trying to figure out the situación of my Roland MS1, i receive the good update file, but it didnt work again and i get confuse on what was really happening with the machine so i opened up and try to Watch if Any IC was burned, so i decide to replace the one that makes the cmos operations, i replaced with succeed and i try again the update with the new good files and again the update failed.
So on a desperate chapter of i don't know what, i startup to get creative and try alternative methods of update using the bad, the good files, all files that Ive got and nothing works.

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
So in my last attemp to recover my favorite Sampler, i flip the order of the update and Guess what..
IT WORKS!!
So if anyone outthere still had a Roland MS1 with the failed update Here is the proceduré i execute to recover it.
1. Get all the files for the update(smf update and the .mid)
2. Most important... flip the order of the update, you first start the update to transmit the files vía Midi with all the connections already Made it, and when the update gets to 6 seconds, you fast turn on the Roland MS1 on BOOT MODE, and the update start fresh and finish complete.
This works for me and now my Roland MS1 it's working again.
Send a msg if you are in the same situation, and i like to thanks to gmeredith for the support and for send me the files big thanks.

The best thing is that Now it reads the new cards, i had a Lexar media adaptar PCMCIA to compactflash and a Sandisk 32mb compact flash and it works flawless.

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
Great news! Glad it now works
Sometimes its the uploader program that creates the difficulty,I think I tried Bomes SendSX and it worked without problems. MidiOX may also work well.

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
Hello gents,
During this confirnment I found my old MS1 and going through this thread I was wondering about updating the BIOS as I have lost my memory card and need to get a new one.
Quick question though as I forgot how to use this, (have not used it in more than 20 years), how do you find out the bios version currently installed?
Do you have to connect it, or is there a way to display it on the machine itself.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
With the machine switched off, hold down pads 1 and 8 and switch the machine on. The display will show the revision numbers and bios number. This is on p5 of the service manual
Check this great troubleshooting thread here for the service manual download and other info:

Re: Roland MS1 bios update problems
Was 1.13 bios supposed to fix anything or give updates?
