My DX21 is showing japanese junk

Post by DX21 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 7:32 am

Hello! Recently I've found that my DX21 will display japanese junk and stop working intermittently if I don't leave it plugged in,is the onboard battery dead? I heard of this problem on synths like the DX7

If so, do I need any specific battery or could I replace it with a PC Motherboard CR2302 battery? I literally have dozens of these.

Also, does it have the battery in a holder or is it just a tabbed solder battery? In that case, would it be a good Idea to Augment in a battery holder? (again, I have lots of spare computers to pull parts from)

Sounds like a battery issue.

Here's a youtube video that shows how to do replace an internal battery.

However there's something about this video that bothers me. I had a similar battery holder in my Roland JP8000, and I didn't have to desolder and solder up the holder to replace the battery. I think, but I'm not completely sure, that he did an extra unneccessary step and possibly could've just popped the battery out and popped a new one in.

Hmmmm....

yep, the battery has welded tabs to it, I just unsoldered it, took the tabs off with a razor blade carefully, added a quick dab of solder to each side and then put the new battery in with the tabs intact.

She lives and sounds like a beauty, I did a factory reset and now it runs like it's 1985 again :D

Image

I installed a battery holder so I can conveniently change the battery when it dies in the next couple years :)

Apologies for the camera quality.

Ii acquired a DX21 having the same issue. I plan on replacing the battery soon, but can you send me a link on how to do a factory reset (or just describe it in detail? I'm just a bassist farting around with old technology)?

It's in the service manual, iirc (it's been a while since I replaced the battery in my DX21).

Don't forget to TURN ON THE SYNTHESIZER. Often this is the reason why you get no sound out of it. - ARP 2600 manual, 1971
