Buying a monosynth
I used to own a Moog Prodigy and later a nice '77 Model D. I had to sell them both but I'm now looking to pick up another monosynth, vintage I guess but not really sure.
The model D was really nice but too much of a synth for me, especially considering the price. I tried the Behringer and it comes kinda close but I can't get past the small enclosure.
The Prodigy was OK but right now the Grandmother would probably be a better buy I suppose. Haven't tried it yet.
With the idea to break away from Moog I started looking at the Roland SH-09 and SH-2. I only had the chance to try the SH-09 briefly and I liked it, even though it didn't work 100%.
I'm not really up to date with newer synths, unfortunately.
Is there anything similar you would recommend for under a grand? Any thoughts regarding the Rolands?

What kinds of sound qualities are you looking for? I always vouch for the Korg MS-20 Mini; it's a nice balance of affordable and featureful, and it sounds terrific.

Also excellent, although a bit pricier.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I need to try those, so far I only played a vintage MS-10 but didn't really like it.

Re: Buying a monosynth
The MS-series character is definitely very distinctive and hard to mistake for some of the more conventional classics, for sure.

This. I have the mini version, and it's an excellent companion to my Model D. I also have a Korg MS-20, which sits quite apart from those two sonically (and has that killer resonant high-pass).Jabberwalky wrote:You might like the new Korg Arp Odyssey

SH-2 is what you want.

Re: Buying a monosynth
SH2 is cool and has that great bass tone, but IMO $1k can go much further on new analog and touch upon the same sonic territory. He could essentially get a Korg Arp, and a Bass Station 2 (a modern comparison to the sh series) for the price of an Sh2.

I am a huge fan of my arturia mircobrute, its certainly a newer model worth considering. Its missing whitenoise but has plenty of options for getting dirty with the sounds.

I haven't had a chance to see one in person, but everything I've seen from reviews to videos show that the Moog Grandmother is a nice piece of kit.
