Has to be the OB-X since Taurus does not has S&H. Also, there's a YouTube video from a couple of years ago of someone emulating Moving Pictures sounds with the OP-X, and I remember the "Camera Eye" S&H sound being one of them.

Is this the demo you were referring?



Just curious... how well could the Prophet '08 replicate this patch?

Also, the more I listen to Subdivisions the more I hear a layered sound (or split) on the high notes... it comes in during the intro when the drums switch to the ride.

S&H-sound is OB-X. The Taurus only appears as slow-decaying bass pedal sounds in the song...

The B minor - G-major - A-major chord sequencer is played with layered Oberheim sounds.
The first layer is the same as in the beginning and the higher octave layer is a preset Geddy Used for choir in the chorus in "The Analog Kid", the following track on the album.

Signals tour book confirms:

OBERHEIM OBX
OBXA with a DSX Digital Sequencer, interfaced with two Moog Tarus Pedals
Roland JP 8 Synth, and a Roland 8o8 Compu-Rhythm working in conjunction
Mini-Moog with Yamaha E1010 Delay.

Oberheim-- OB-1, OB-X, and OB-8, two sets of Taurus pedals, interfaced with the OB-8, Mini-Moog, Roland Digital Sequencer, assorted effects.
BASSES AND GUITARS
Two Rickenbacker 4001's, Fender Jazz Bass, Rickenbacker 4002, double-neck Rickenbacker, incorporating 4001 with twelve-string guitar, double-neck Rickenbacker, incorporating 4001 with six-string guitar, Ovation acoustic.
AMPLIFICATION
Two BGW 750B power amps, two Ashley preamps, two 2 x 15 Thiele-design cabinets fitted with EVM speakers, two V4B Ampeg cabinets with JBL speakers, Yamaha solid state guitar amp.
VOCAL MICROPHONE
Electrovoice DS-35.

That tour was january-july 1981 and there was no OB-8 out at the time and he doesn't use it on the "Exit Stage left" Dvd from the Moving Pictures tour either... and between 1982 and 1985 he used the OB-Xa.

probably, as the 8VS was custom installed w/ a minimoog in the same case.
being that the OB-X was the only other polysynth Oberheim made at the time, referring to the EVS as an 'OB-8' for short seems feasible to me...and was probably said more than once well before the production of the christened OB-8.

One other thing worth mentioning... I first saw Rush on the Farewell to Kings tour. On that tour, they played several songs from the first three albums and added synth parts to them. The one I recall the most is that Geddy played the Mini on the choruses to "Lakeside Park", including adding brief solos to the ends of the choruses. Also, during Alex's guitar solo on "A Passage to Bangkok", Geddy played the rhythm guitar part on the 12-string neck of his Rick 4080, and used the Taurus pedals for the bass... quite a different sound from the album!

Did Rush ever perform "Tears" (from 2112) live? If so, what did they use for the Mellotron part?

Tears is such a great song...one of my all-time favorites.

I checked a number of sites that track artist setlists for concert tours, and did not see any stats indicating they've ever performed it on their live tours...though that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. (They do seem to have done some interesting one-offs at various times, e.g. "Vera Lynn"..?)

Since the Mellotron was/is Hugh Syme's and he played on the album of course (credited), they would have probably had to bring Hugh along if they wanted the real thing!

Cool!

Tears are one of very few Rush songs never played live along with "Losing It" and some others.

Could you elaborate on this... I know the OB-X was the main synth on this track as seen from live footage and the music video. I know the OB-Xa was off to his left with the sequencer and the Jupiter. Would the OB-x be triggering the sequencer somehow? How did they sync a sequencer this way? Or was the Ob-X just layered with the Ob-Xa or the Jupiter? The chords just seem layered to me... Not a separate sequence.

So, OB-X or 8-voice? What's doing what? Taurus drone or the OB on bass? sounds like there are two "bass" sounds anyway... OB and taurus. The OB has the S&H thing going and after the drums come in it goes away... then it comes back in before the break.

He supposedly used OB-X on this record... but the OB-X doesn't offer splits AFAIK... He must have multi-tracked these parts then approximated live with the different synths and the set-up described a few posts back.

How did Ged handle patching up and down live BTW... with his hands full most of the time he had to be using switch pedals or Tony Geranios.

Haha, sorry, I wrote sequencer instead of chord sequence. On the studio version it is just two layers of OB-X, but he might have played it live with the layer function on the OB-Xa.
