YAMAHA MDF1 is it worthless today?

Post by philip » Thu Dec 19, 2013 11:56 pm

I have an opportunity to get one very cheap and use with my TX7, but do I need this?
It seems like this thing doesn't have any internal memory?!

This is the one that uses Quick Discs (there was another MDF that used regular floppies)? Those things are impossible to find these days. Run, run!!!!

Don't you use your computer for sysex transfers?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I'll take it!!!! Not sure why you would ever buy one as it's just a midi saver in an obsolete ancient format but I used an MDF1 back in the 80's and would love to get my hands on a used one. I've got a lot of old discs and wonder what is on them. Let me know!!

Yes. MDF2 used DD (720k) format, and MDF3 used HD (1.44M).

It's completely pointless. You can just store anything you need via MIDI on your computer. The same one you're typing from now.

Hi Tuchin, I ve got one that works if you still want it.

The issue with all QD drives is 1. the belt disintegrates after a couple of decades, but I replaced mine with a new one. It had to be the exact same type of belt, not a rubber band despite what some people claim

and 2. The cogs in the drive may warp over time, but the Yamaha design is sturdier than the others, e.g. Korg. Downside is the endless number of screws and bolts holding the Yamaha QD drive in place. But mechanically, its more reliable.

I cant say the same thing for the quick discs themselves, especially after a couple of decades. Might have to reload them a few times to get some of them to read, data may corrupt.
