Moog discontinues Slim Phatty

Post by meatballfulton » Thu Nov 13, 2014 12:36 pm

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

What other rackable unit do they have now? The Minitaur (with special ears), and?

Well it's not like they're recalling all units that sit on store shelves still, so you might find them around the place for a long time still.

Will we get blowout pricing anywhere? Somehow I doubt it given Moog's pricing model, but I see a lot of Phatty's on the used market (esp after Sub 37 was announced) and at some point the retailers are going to want to reclaim their warehouse space.

id be totally happy with a little (or slim) phatty idk why people balk at the interface. im all for experimenting on a faceplate full of knobs but if you cant deal with one parameter editing on a synth, chances are you dont really grasp synthesis. i always looked at it at a Moog Source x4, and with the rotary knobs with great digital interpolation? kind of elegant actually...

This is really disappointing. I was hoping to buy one new someday. I know there's always the used market, but I prefer to buy new whenever I can. It's a bit surprising that they would do this because I see a lot of musicians using the slim phattys live and I know they're pretty popular. But perhaps they aren't selling as well, or perhaps there is some other reasoning for this.

I was hoping to pick up a little phatty to kind of match my Taurus 3. Then a racked phatty or two to add some more voices.
I might just skip the phatty and see if I can get a white lil phatty someplace. I really dig the sounds a lot but to be frank, my dollar goes farther with other brands. Elektron give me 4 voices and some more contemporary features for the price of two phattys. Arturia is half the price and they have limited edition easter colors!

It's funny, other brands discontinue models and speculation about new products abounds. Moog does it and...well that is just Moog, you liked it? Tough.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but all the people saying 'I kind of planned on buying one one day' are sort of the reason that things get discontinued. I hate to state the obvious, but companies that want to stay in business keep making things while people are buying them and then stop when the buying slows down. They don't keep going because of the few that might eventually buy one down the road, that's the actions of a company heading for bankruptcy.

On a lighter note, doesn't this being discontinued mean it's time for VSE to start speculating on a new Moog poly? The reasoning being that the SP was kind of supposed to be the buy one voice at a time version of a Moog poly that you could add to over time but it didn't really end up doing that, so now they'll just do it all in one box? ;)

I was going to buy a Voyager Old School someday. I thought they would around for a long time. I waited too long and look what happened.

I did buy the T3, 'only 2000 made'.
But I was still seeing them for sale for more than a year after they finished making them.
There are still a few places with phattys for sale and those were discontinued months ago.
I'm not really tripping on picking either up.
Though I aint gonna lie, that aluminum voyager is right up my ex-comic collector nerd a*s.

To be honest, meh.

Was kind of tempted by one now and again but never committed. Can't really say I'm too stricken by the news now; there's still plenty out there if the fancy takes me one day.
