I've never had the pleasure of hearing a real string machine in person, but I have been getting plenty of use of VSM in the tracks I'm working on lately. I can't say how close to the originals it is, but it sounds great and fits very easily into mixes. The track "strings" on my virb page is all VSM,...

What a wonderful band. Just plain wonderful. Yeah. I wrote them off for a long time because I'd only heard their later hits, but the early stuff is genius and pure candy for synth nuts. Somewhat ironically, Humphries is a big fan of the Pro-53 softsynth, which a lot of forum snobs wouldn't touch wi...

I'm not sure that any kind of detailed description really goes further than just saying that it sucks. 'What do you think of the sound of this synth?' 'I think it sucks. I just don't like it'. Well, ok....I'm not sure that the 'why' really takes us too much farther, especially when everyone here is...

Did we disagree before?

Musicians have made great music with both the JP and the Nord and I imagine they will with the P08 as well.

Meanwhile synth geeks will go on calling each other names in arguments over analog vs VA for the billionth time.

As I said, I spent 3 years or so in a studio with a Nord Lead, and it plain sucked on repeated listens. This is the kind of opinion I hear from synth junkies all the time and almost never from musicians. Check out Autechre's Cichlisuite EP for tracks made almost exlusively with a Nord. Any criticis...

I am genuinely interested in hearing Raiven's reasons for preferring the Nord, and I am happy to share my reasons for preferring the JP-6, and then we can leave it at that. At least then we can both express our positive views, without recourse to bringing each others good character into question :D...

Well you can switch between 2 and 4 poles on the P08 filter - but not sure if this qualifies as multi-mode.. No. I mean HP/BP/LP. I also miss the more immediate polymod stuff from the P5. I realize the P08 can do more with a full mod matrix but I love the P5 and the Nord for their immediacy....

I think the lack of a multimode filter is actually a pretty major downside for the P08. If it weren't for that I'd go P08 over J6 any day but the MM filter on the J6 might swing me that direction.

One downside of the J6 is that's pretty large, especially compared to the P08.

maybe with effects and tweaking the BBOX is more capable than I thought... Absolutely. You can also make lots of great percussion sounds with the other machines, particularly the FM machines. The big downside is you only get six tracks total to work with, as opposed to 16 with the MD. how does the ...

What you need to understand is that, no matter what one you buy, if you enjoy it...you will want the other machine right away. This is not true in my case. I love the MM as a "color" machine, to add unique sounds alongside other instruments. I don't like the sound of the MD that much and drums are ...

Do any of you guys have MD-only or MM-only tracks that I can hear. I'd love to hear a more melodic song done on the MD and a more percussive song done on the MM.
Not a track really, just jamming around, but this is using only the BBOX drum machine from the MM:

If I could only have one I'd go for the Monomachine, no question. The MM is a better drum machine than the MD is a synth. You could certainly buy a more powerful hybrid setup for the price of the MM but its the tight integration of the sequencer and the synth engines that make the MM so much fun. Yo...

It's a VA/wavetable hybrid.

You should check your ears. Last time I checked its very easy to tell the difference between a nord lead and a virus or any other VA for that matter. Only synth nerds care. I've used an XT extensively, one of my old bandmates has one, its definitely a subtractive synth. It has the same signal path,...

I disagree with this statement, having another VA is not going to be redundant, as each VA sounds different, just like any two synths would. If I'm only going to have two instruments I'd rather not have two pianos, even if piano nerds insist they sound different. On top of that, you recommended a V...
