Cheap way to set up a room of people with synths
I have an opportunity to do a small class for an "education" day that my work does. I was thinking that doing a hands-on (subtractive) synth workshop might be really cool. The idea would be (I haven't actually worked through this yet; just my initial thoughts): 1. Small history lesson (with audio ex...

Re: DSI Announces New REV2 16-Voice Analog Poly Synth!
The REV2 has a projected ship date of April 2017 with a MAP of $1499 for the 8-voice version and $1999 for the 16-voice version. Clearly this must be some sort of typo. A DSI synth that lists for under $2000? YEAH RIGHT! In the video he does say that this is intended to be a cheaper synth than the ...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?
Maybe find a used Kurzweil pc361? More expensive than just a controller, but it'll certainly control anything you want, plus have the added benefit of being a powerful instrument in its own right.

Re: Best synth basslines of all time?
Maybe it's cheesy, but man, I can't get enough of the bass line on Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror. Smooth, and so in the groove. It's a master class on playing, in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm in. $20 for a 1/1200 chance? I can afford that gamble.

Re: Roland JV-2080
I've got a fully expanded 2080. It's awesome, and probably ended up costing me around $800 over the course of a few years. I got some good deals on expansion cards which, like lots of 2nd-hand purchases, was about hitting the right purchase at the right time. I use it all the time for live gigging. ...

Re: Alesis QS7.1 - Thoughts?
I've had a 7.1 since they came out (replaced my 7.0 that got stolen out of my living room). It's the one piece of gear I've owned the longest. It's super reliable, jam packed full of of usable patches (I also have some QCards), and building "Mixes" for live use is very easy. Also, the menu-diving fo...

Re: Kurzweil pc3x vs.....something cheaper
If you love the action and the piano sound, and you're not desperate for cash, then keep it. You never know how that used 12-15 year old board has been treated, what fader/pot/output is on the verge of giving out, etc etc. I think that the #1 rule of Gear Acquisition ought to be: "If it is a regular...

Re: Small-format board
Cool, thanks for the feedback. Rick N Boogie , I'd totally go for the Blofeld, but it's a little out of my budget for what I'm looking for (not to mention the Virus). Ultranova it is . . . but first I'll wait and see what happens at Christmas . . . and then NAMM is just around the corner so maybe I ...

Small-format board
I'm working on fine-tuning my live rig, and am looking to get a small keyboard to add to it. Basically, I'm looking for something that I can: Carry easily under one arm Place on top of a Rhodes, piano, table, amp, or any other relatively small, flat surface Is polyphonic, and can provide its own int...

Re: How far out of your way have you gone to get a synth?
I've driven to Montreal to buy gear, which, while not the farthest, is international, so that's got to count for something. I (sadly) drove to the Albany area to sell an OB8 that had some issues (all voices worked, but about half of them were not outputting at the same level as the others) for $500....

Re: Waldorf Pulse 2
paraphonic means that instead of 8 voice of polyphony (VCO-VCF-VCA per voice) you have 8 stages of VCO but only one stage of the rest. For example, a synth with 1VCO, 1VCF and 1VCA, if its 4 voice polyphonic, it means that all voices have 1VCO, 1VCF and 1VCA stages, if its 4 voice paraphonic, it me...
